Vern Alvin Ficken, 92, of Vermillion, South Dakota passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls with his family by his side. A Private Family Celebration of Vern’s Life will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion with Pastor Elmer “Sandy” Aakre officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Bluff View Cemetery with military honors conducted by Vermillion Clay Co Post#3061. Vern was born on December 24, 1927 in Vermillion, the son of Clifford and Doris (Ester) Ficken. He raised in Vermillion and graduated from Vermillion High School. He was married to Katie Tomobe on October 1, 1951 in Lakio, Japan and they were blessed with two children, David and Candace. Vern enlisted in the United States Army serving his county for twenty years. He later worked for the Department of Navy until he retired in 2010. He was a devoted veteran who had a big heart for loving and serving his country. In his spare time, he loved golfing and was often found at the golf courses. Survivors are his two children, David Ficken of Placentia, CA, and Candace Beckham of Pickerington, OH. He was also blessed with four grandchildren, Matthew, Courtney, Alec and Ashley.
