Ronny "RJ" Jon Evans Obituary

Ronny “RJ” Jon Evans, 63, of Walterboro, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest November 9, 2020, at the Veterans Victory House in Walterboro.  He was born July 22, 1957 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan.  He was the youngest of identical twins to the late Mr. Charles Jan Evans and the late Mrs. Beverly Jeanette Qualler Evans.

Upon graduating with the class of 1975 from Screven County High School in Sylvania Georgia, Ron briefly attended Georgia Southern University before entering the United States Air Force on December 6, 1976.  He proudly served as an Air Traffic Controller for 20 years, receiving a plethora of accolades for his unsurpassed air traffic controlling skills before retiring December 31, 1996.  Upon retiring, he joined his parents in the Hotel/Motel business for the next 10 years. This venture proved to be a perfect fit for Ron, who genuinely loved people.

Stricken with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the early 1990’s, Ron had been a resident of Veterans Victory House (VVH) in Walterboro since February 25, 2014. Despite his own disabilities from MS, he took it upon himself to ensure every veteran received an honorable “discharge” upon leaving the facility when they too were called home. Sunday mornings, Ron led the music portion of every worship service in the facility. He touched the lives of every single individual whether resident or staff of VVH. He touched the lives of many visiting other residents; to the extent they would always make it a point to see him before they left the building. Self-pity was not a virtue known to Ron. He ardently refused to let MS infringe upon his life, or the life of others. A trip to the hospital or the VA was an opportunity as he saw it to meet new people! As he was fond of pointing out: “I have MS, it doesn’t have ME”!  Ron’s courageous battle with MS was an inspiration to anyone who met and knew him.  His sense of humor, infectious smile, wit, pranks, corny jokes and servant’s heart will forever be his legacy at VVH; that and his love of diet M&M’s

His family will always remember his smile, his passion for life, country, family and friends. He also will be remembered through the many people left behind whose lives he touched in such a positive and uplifting way. He made a difference in the lives of everyone he met. Through them, Ron’s legacy is he leaves this world a better place than when he found it. Ron would never say goodbye after a visit or call; never! Ron’s preference was to say “see you soon” or “talk to you later”.  So for Ron, this is not goodbye, rather we will see you again soon.

He is survived by his four children Ashlei Davis, Erin Evans, Christopher Evans and Jonathon Evans, six grandchildren; Sydnei Payne, Shyenne Bell, Skylar Payne, Owen Payne, Tobe Payne, and Gunnar Davis, one great-grandchild Sophia Solis, and an equally large number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his three siblings; brother USAF Chief (Ret.)Charles Jr. (Linda), sister Debi Tebeau, and his identical twin brother USAF SMSgt (Ret.)Rick (Debra) Evans.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held 3 o’clock, Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at The Brice Herndon Funeral Home, Walterboro Chapel. The family will have a time of visitation an hour prior to the service.
