Cecil Dwaine Short Obituary

An informal gathering of family and close friends is planned for the Saturday after Thanksgiving to commemorate the passing of  Dwaine Short, 81, of Portales.

Cecil Dwaine Shorty was born June 14, 1939 in Clovis, NM to the home of Ora Lee (King) and Cecil Needen Short, and died Nov. 7, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  Mr. Short grew up in the Clovis area, and learned to ride at a very early age.  At the age of 17, he enlisted in the US Army, and served from 1956 until 1963.  On June 30, 1960, in Clovis, he was married to Judith McKee.  As a young man, Dwaine enjoyed participating in rodeos and riding broncs.  He loved horses all his life.  Through the years he had worked as a mechanic for John Deere and Massey Tractor dealerships.  He was trained to repair foreign cars, and for a period of time was employed in Lubbock at International Motors.  Since 1972, he had made his home in Portales.  For a few years, he was employed as a Police Officer for the Portales Police Dept.   Later he drove for AMPI for two years, before he was injured on the job.  After his recovery, he opened his own mechanic shop at his home.

Mr. Short was a member of the First United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed going deer hunting with his friends, and bird hunting with his bird dog, Lady Bird.  Dwaine was very talented musically, and could play most any instrument by ear.  He and his family often enjoyed playing guitar and other instruments together.  He was a member of VFW Post 9515 in Portales.

He is survived by Judy Short, his wife of more than 60 years; a son, David Short of Portales; three grandchildren, Jerame Short, Meagan Alonzo and Tiffany Garcia; ten great-grandchildren, Ethan Short, Alexis Castillo, Dorian Short, Elizabeth Castillo, Cecilia Castillo, Kyrenna Short, Danielle Alonzo, Lily Anna Alonzo, Cali Garcia and Tylee Garcia; a brother, Jerry Short of Truth or Consequences, NM and a sister, Lovetta Short of Hobbs, NM.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Debbie Vanous who died Aug. 24, 2013.
