Heather Penelope (Penny) Pruden

April 10, 1944 – November 9, 2020

On November 9, 2020 our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, auntie and friend died at the Selkirk hospital.

Mom was born in St. Boniface Hospital to Mary (nee Palmer) and Lawson Dillabough. She was a beautiful baby with big brown eyes and the most amazing head of hair. She grew up in Selkirk and spent the summers swimming in the slew and the winters skating on the rink she and her brothers made on Little Lake.

Mom’s father was killed in action during World War II when she was just a baby. Mom was sad that she grew up without her dad who she loved but never had the chance to know; she spoke of him often, always with love and pride.

Mom met our father Tom Pruden in 1961, and they were soon married (she was such a pretty young bride). Mom often reminisced about their first date when Tom picked her up and surprised her with a baby rabbit he had found. She said she fell in love him at that moment. His kindness and gentle nature immediately won her over. After getting married they started their life together in a small house in Clandeboye.

Dad became a correctional officer and proceeded to move the family to Stony Mountain where mom proved to be an amazing homemaker. She was a great cook, and took much pride in ensuring her family always had a neat and comfortable home. During their time in Stony Mountain, mom and dad made many friends and they loved going out together. Mom proved to be quite talented at bowling, curling, and darts (she even won the Manitoba Ladies Dart Championship in 1989 – a tremendous accomplishment!). The shelves in the house quickly filled up with the trophies mom and dad won – she liked the recognition, but secretly hated the “tacky” trophies. Mom was also an avid reader, and this allowed her to hone her skills at Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Jeopardy – she was truly a force to be reckoned with. She was also a gifted crossword solver.

It was so special to be able to have a full time mother – always there for us. Going home for lunch from school, supper on the table at 5pm sharp, home made birthday cakes, and Christmas baking that will never be forgotten. She worked hard for her family and it was much appreciated. Over the years, the family took many camping trips, and they were great successes due to mom’s fantastic planning skills. We knew it was time to get excited when she would start her exhaustive camping list – she never forgot anything and we always ate well and had plenty of fun.

Eventually mom and dad moved the family to Winnipeg to provide better opportunities for the kids. Mom loved her “new” home, and eventually landed a job at Life Touch and then Jostens where she worked for many years. In 1995 mom and dad built their dream retirement home along Wavey Creek in Clandeboye where they lived for many years. They were so proud of their house and their beautiful yard. It was around this time that mom became “granny”. Granny deeply loved all of her grandchildren, and she had a special place in her heart for her great-grandchild Light. The grandchildren were so very lucky to have such a devoted granny.

Mom will be dearly missed by her daughters Karyn (Pat) and Candy, son Tom (Sandra), brothers Dave (Brenda) and George (Jerri), grandchildren John, Stevie (Joel), David, Mike, James and Hannah, and her great-grandchild Light. Not to mention her many nieces and nephews that she loved to keep in touch with. Mom was also predeceased by her daughter Pamela who she grieved till the day she died. Mom also lost her best friend, our dad, in 2016 – and she missed him terribly.

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support through the many phone calls and texts. Thank you cousin Margaret – mom loved your phone calls. Neighbours Monty, Yvonne and Gianna – mom appreciated your friendship. Also, thanks to Dr. Pandy and all the other doctors and nurses that looked after mom during her stay at Selkirk Hospital.

Good-bye mom.
