Leah Michelle Hammersmark Obituary

“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth” and now am free. Leah slipped away quietly on Friday Nov. 6th at her home South of McLeod. She was very tired after a long battle with ALS which she dealt with courageously for the last 12 years. She was 52 years old. Leah was born in Bozeman, MT to Marcia (Hoskins) and Steve McNeil on October 23, 1968. Leah grew up surrounded by her family, including both sets of grandparents and left with many very fond memories of her childhood. They spent lots of time riding horses, skiing the slopes, snowmobiling, canoeing and many more outdoor activities. She and her pony Elmer were frequently the champs at the many O-mok-see’s they went to. She was an accomplished sprinter, even going to a Hershey’s track meet in North Carolina, one of the few places she ever ran into anyone faster than her. Family and friends may remember her as being “slightly” competitive - in a good way. During her teenage years her family moved to McLeod, where she, Laine, Marcia, and Mike (with lots of help from family and friends) built their cabin from bottom to top while living in the shed next door for the summer. The same cabin where she spent her later summers sitting in her swing outside soaking up just as much sunshine as she could. She loved going to sleep listening to the many frogs just out the back door. She acquired some surprising and varied talents during these formative years, including cow jumping and learning to bondo and paint her own car - repeatedly. She met Roger in high school and they were married in 1989. She became a mother in 1994 when Wyatt was born and Tyler followed in 1996. Leah excelled at being a mom, and fiercely loved Wyatt and Tyler. She shared many of the same experiences from her childhood with them, doing many of the same things she grew up doing. She was a very supportive, patient and understanding teacher and mentor for them. She tried to pass on her skiing and skating skills to Roger too, with more limited success. Many more good times were had helping her boys with pigs and steers for the fair & sports (especially helping coach them at soccer). Leah loved ranching, being outdoors, and was a dynamo for getting things done. She loved all of her dogs and horses, but was very close to Molly, who was almost always nearby. The two of them spent quite a few hours in the saddle together. Leah was preceded in death by her grandparents Paul and Kathryn Hoskins, Bettye (Mimi) White, Charlie McNeil and Sister-in-law LoraLee (Lonnie) Clark, Jim Favinger and Tom Hammersmark. Also Molly, Frisky, Thumper, Buddy, Bandit, Elmer, PeeWee, Deuce and Skeeter (and more). Leah’s Heaven is populated with them all. Leah is survived by her husband Roger, sons Wyatt and Tyler, mother Marcia, father Steve, and brother Laine (Shirley). Also lots of extended family and many friends. Thank you to her many friends for the help, thoughts and prayers. We are very sad to see her go, but relieved for her suffering to end. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Please visit www.Never-Gone.com/Memorials/LeahHammersmark. More stories and memories of Leah will be greatly appreciated.
