Bigelow was educated by the Coe-Brown Academy in Northwood, NH and received his High School Diploma. He joined the Navy in 1957 and served on the Seabees Battalion. He built bridges and structures that were dedicated to the safe transport of soldiers across dangerous territory. These bridges also offered safe passage to the citizens of the countries he served in. Bigelow and his team were dedicated Navy-men who were proud to serve the United States of America overseas. Bigelow returned home from war in 1962 and met Doreen Newman, together they had one son, JB. After their separation he later married Sandra Wood. Mr. Wood joined the Carpenter’s Union in New Hampshire and was a proud member. Bigelow also worked in the Seabrook Powerplant shortly after moving to the Biddeford area in 1979.

He specialized in painting homes, signs, feathers and other miscellaneous projects such as Former President George W. Bush Sr.’s yacht, the Fidelity. Bigelow’s art and spirit touched thousands of hearts, he proudly showcased his work and encouraged other young artists to pursue their dreams.
Bigelow was described as an all-around great guy, a dedicated friend and family man. He proudly invited hundreds to his annual Labor Day Lobster Bakes in York County where he served lobster, clams and all the fixins’. Mr. Wood was the kind of man to give anyone the shirt off his back if it meant they wouldn’t go without. These important lessons of unconditional kindness resonated with his sons and they continued his lessons with their children.
