Alice Amelia Groft Obituary

Alice Amelia Groft, née Beardemphl, 98, of Redfield, South Dakota, passed away on November 6, 2020, in Redfield.  She was born on September 4, 1922, to parents Amzi and Edith Beardemphl. Alice married John Groft in Ashton, South Dakota on November 19, 1940. Alice is survived by their five children:  Amelia and husband Glenn Watson of Mandan, North Dakota; Sherry Baloun of Redfield, South Dakota; Rose and husband David Haselhorst of Plymouth, Minnesota; John and wife Patricia Groft of Ashton, South Dakota; and James Groft of Ashton, South Dakota. Alice is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 32 great-great-grandchildren. Alice’s beloved husband, John Groft, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage, died in 2001. She is also predeceased by son-in-law Bob Baloun, daughter-in-law Carol Groft, and great-grandchild Bailey Groft.

Alice Groft was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a farmer, a baker, and a hard worker. Together Alice and John raised their five children, farmed their land, and took care of their animals. Alice and John enjoyed a true partnership in life. Their love was inspiring. Alice, like John, loved horses and passed on her love of animals to her children and grandchildren.

After John passed, Alice moved from Ashton to Redfield where she enjoyed bingo and card games with her friends. Alice was known for her intelligence, kindness, and quick wit.  She never failed to complete all of the paper’s daily puzzles and was extremely difficult to beat at any board game! Alice also enjoyed knitting and crocheting many gorgeous gifts for her large family. But her absolute favorite activity was always spending time with her family.

The funeral will be held on a date to be decided. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Lung Association.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield.  (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
