George F. Kurz Plattsburgh, New York Obituary

George F. Kurz

George Francis Michael Kurz, Jr., 88, of Cliff Haven, died unexpectedly yet peacefully in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Stephenson) Kurz for 68 years. Born in Mineola, NY, on Oct. 18, 1932, son of the late George F. Kurz, Sr. and Helen (Doherty) Kurz, he was raised in AuSable Forks and graduated from AuSable Forks High School. George was a proud U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a sergeant from the New York State Dept. of Corrections after 36 years of service at Clinton Correctional Facility and was a longtime member of Our Lady of Victory Church. An outstanding local athlete, he excelled in baseball and basketball, and was inducted into the inaugural class of the AuSable Valley Central School Athletics Hall of Fame. He played professional baseball for the St. Jean Quebec Pirates, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. He played fast-pitch softball for years and was a fixture at the Annual AuSable Forks Fast-Pitch Tournament. George touched the lives of many young athletes in so many ways...as a longtime high school basketball official, a coach and mentor, and as a local sports enthusiast. He adored being surrounded by his family and left us with many wonderful memories that will be cherished forever. A loving “Dad”, “Pop” and “Big Poppy”, he leaves five children, Jim and Diana Kurz of Newington, CT, Kathy and Jim Prue of Peru, Tom Kurz and Patty Gravelle of Peru, Linda and John Farbotko of Rouses Point, and Jean and Bobby Boissy of Naples, FL; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Bill Brennan of Mosley, VA; a brother Greg Kurz of AuSable Forks; and several nieces and nephews. Callings hours will be Sunday, November 8, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday November 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh. Full military honors will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
