Brattleboro- Walter Wilson, “Wally” White, Jr., 89, of First Level Drive in West Brattleboro, a longtime resident of Frost Place and a native of Brattleboro, went to be with his Lord and Savior early Monday morning, November 2, 2020 at Genesis Health Center in Keene following a lengthy period of failing health. Wally was born in Brattleboro on February 15, 1931, the son of Walter and Ruth (Avery) White. He was raised in Brattleboro, attending local public schools including Brattleboro High School. During his high school years, he excelled in varsity football and was on record as being the fastest running back in the state of Vermont. During his youth he also boxed in local and regional competitions. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged from active service on July 27, 1954. Wally worked most of his career as a roofer, employed at the Brattleboro Retreat for over 30 years. He also operated his own roofing contracting business for several years. A devout Christian and steadfast in his walk of faith, he went on to establish one of the earlier food pantries in Brattleboro as well as his own Christian outreach, Faith Ministries, located at his home on Frost Place. His humble little church was across the street from his home where he regularly held Sunday services as well as weekly bible studies. Wally had a strong passion for helping and working with the homeless. Additionally, he was instrumental in establishing an AA chapter in town and was proud to be a founding member. On March 12, 1960 in Elkton, Maryland he was married to Emily Miller who predeceased him on May 21,1992. He later married Linda Weeks on October 31, 1992 in Dover, Vermont in a simple ceremony for immediate family and close friends. Besides his wife of 28 years, he leaves: one son, Walter Isaac White of Brattleboro; a daughter, Faith Christine White, also of Brattleboro; a grandson, Trevor Anthony Leclair of Brattleboro; one brother, Robert White of Westminster West, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Maurice “Duke” White, and a sister, Helen Brown. Graveside committal services with military honors will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery where he will be laid to rest beside his parents. Officiating will be close friend and pastor, Michael Martel, of Community Christian Church, New Ipswich, NH and Pastor Matt Miller of Community Bible Chapel in Brattleboro.
