Della Ella Mamie Benning Obituary

Della Benning passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 3, 2020, at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield, SD where she had resided for her last five years.

Della Steinbis was born on June 5, 1925, to Walter and Ruby Steinbis at their farm home nine miles southwest of Tulare, SD. She was raised on the farm and attended country school through 8th grade, then Tulare High School where she graduated in 1943. She married Curtis Benning on October 3, 1943. They had three sons, the oldest (Scott) was born in January of 1945 while Curtis was in Okinawa fighting in WWII.

Della was a loving, devoted wife and mother and was active in the Tulare community as a member of the Tulare Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Tulare chapter of the Eastern Star.

She and Curt owned and operated Curt & Della’s Grocery in Tulare for many years and were known for their friendliness, their well-stocked fresh meat counter, and their large assortment of nickel candy.

Della was interested in genealogy and history, and having spent her life in the Tulare area, she became a “go to” person for information about its history. She was helpful in creating and publishing a book on the history of Tulare and the families who settled in the area.

Several family members have treasured knitted, crocheted, or embroidery projects from Della. She enjoyed making them and enjoyed giving them even more.

She loved her family, extended family, her many friends, and the community. She always tried to be available to help in any time of need, and there were many times of need.

She is survived by her three sons:  Scott (Kathy) of Jackson, WY, Greg (Janice) of Brookings, SD, and Tony (Chrys) of Madison, SD. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, two sisters, Dorothy Davis and Sylvia Dillon, and brother Raymond Steinbis.

There will be a private family burial service at the Tulare Cemetery.  The family requests memorials be directed to the Tulare Cemetery or the Tulare United Church.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield. (www.hykefuneralhome.com)
