Donald Darbee Rogers Obituary

Don D. Rogers passed away on October 28, 2020 at the age of 93 after leading a very full life. Don was born July 17, 1927 to Ray M. Rogers and Gwendolyn (Darbee) Rogers in Redmond, Oregon. He graduated from Redmond Union High School in 1945 and instantly joined the US Navy where he served at the tail end of WW2 as a Seaman 1st Class on the USS Westmoreland APA 104. He remained as a reserve until 1951. On July 18th the day after he turned 21 he married “The prettiest girl in Redmond” Barbara Jean Thornton. Don had many talents and was gifted in mathematics of which he studied while attending Oregon State University after his honorable discharge from the Navy. He loved to work and held many jobs in his early life from working as a typesetter at the Redmond Spokesman, driving and delivering bread throughout Central Oregon, to delivering auto parts for Bend Auto Parts and also working for a pump business in Prineville selling and installing some of the first irrigation systems in the area. His “first love” however was automobiles. Don worked for the local Ford dealership in 1957 when his father suddenly passed away. Don was catapulted into running his father’s clothing store Rogers and Lynch in downtown Redmond. Never one to be an indoors-type person, he sold the store in 1962 and started Don Rogers Auto and Trailer Sales located at the North Y in Redmond. By 1969, the economy took a downward turn and he was forced to close the business. He then worked the next few years for both Thomas Sales and Service and Jonas Chevrolet selling vehicles and travel trailers. In 1979 he and his two sons Mark and Ross Rogers started Big Country RV on the north outskirts of Redmond. They sold the dealership in 1997 and Don retired at the age of 70. An avid hunter and fly fisherman, Don loved the outdoors. In the early 60’s he purchased the family cabin located on the Deschutes River just below Wickiup Reservoir where he spent the remaining summers of his life even until this September. Other cabin owners would congregate on his large back deck overlooking the river for BBQ and libations all the while getting history lessons on Central Oregon from Don’s immense knowledge of the area. His quick wit and sense of humor was his trademark until the day he passed. He was a member of the American Legion for 73 years and a member of the Bend Elks Lodge for 72 years. He also sat on the Redmond City Council for three years starting in 1958. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy Anne Rogers Boone, wife Barbara Thornton Rogers. He is survived by sons Mark Rogers of Redmond, Ross Rogers and wife Martha of Tumalo, daughter Gwendolyn Ellen Rogers Krugle and companion Tim of Vancouver, WA. 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Due to covid restrictions a memorial will be scheduled at a later time. Arrangements were made at Autumn Funerals.
