DOROTHEA ANASTASIA NICOLAS

JUNE 6, 1940  - OCTOBER 28, 2020

Dorothea Anastasia Nicolas, née Pavlos, was born on June 6, 1940, on a date that would come to be known as D-Day. Her family always maintained that the code name for the World War II invasion of France four years later was chosen in her honor.

Dorothea attended schools in suburban Philadelphia, was always a model student. Although, her second grade teacher once called Dorothea’s mother insisting that her hearing be checked. “When I call on her in class she never answers”. In response to the question “what name do you call her” the teacher replied “Dorothy of course”. “That’s the problem. Her name is Dorothea. I told her to never answer to the name Dorothy.”

After graduating from Lower Merion High School in 1958, and with the long-held dream of being an educator, Dorothea attended Shippensburg State College in central Pennsylvania, earning her degree in 1962. She took a position with the Tredyffin-Easttown School District that Fall, the top-rated school district in Pennsylvania, where she would continue as an early childhood teacher for the next 38 years.

Dorothea met her future husband, Nick G. Nicolas during the summer of 1963. Married on December 26, 1965, they enjoyed 51 years together, a perfect couple. They resided in Lafayette Hills, Pennsylvania until their retirement in 2000, when they moved to south Florida, eventually settling in Delray Beach.

As a result of a spinal stroke suffered during the summer of 2005, Dorothea spent her remaining years in a wheelchair, Nick devoted his life and energy to caring for her until his death on January 15, 2017. Dorothea continued with the same positive outlook and spirit that she demonstrated throughout her life.
