Abram "Abe" Funk Obituary

Our dad, grandfather, great-grandfather went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

He was born in Winkler, Manitoba on April 17, 1931. While living in Reinfield, Manitoba, dad was the eighth child of ten.

He was predeceased by both parents Frank & Gertrude, wife Nettie, 2 sons Jim & Milt, five brothers and two sisters.

Dad had an education up to grade 7. He accepted his Lord and Saviour at the early age of nine when he attended the Gimli Bible Camp. Throughout his teen years, Dad worked on the farm until he attended Winkler Bible College and was baptized around the same time. At a young age, Dad realized his athletic abilities as he pitched on a baseball team at the age of thirteen against guys that were sixteen and eighteen years old. His abilities continued during Bible School years as he was   undefeated at ping pong.

In his early twenties, Dad came to the city of Winnipeg, where he met his wife Nettie at the Eatons waiting room. After a short courtship, they were married in July of 1954. They started a family of four, which included Debra, James, Milton and Kelvin.

Dad worked construction, specializing in plastering and drywalling. This career took him away from home for long periods of time and as a result he decided to change. This became a thirty-three-year employment at McGavin’s Foods, where he retired at the age of sixty-six. After this, he returned to his original trade of drywalling, which he did at his leisure  until February 2020. He found his ministry in his work and made many good friends along the way. He always had a story to tell and good advice to give.

Dad was diagnosed with bladder and colon cancer and underwent two  surgeries which left him at the highest level of care needed. He was in the hospital for three months until he was placed in a personal care home on July 19. On October 14, Dad had tested positive for COVID-19, which led to his passing.

Abe is survived by Daughter Debra and husband Frank Doerkson and their children, Wendy & Ryan Wegner: Brooke, Ethan & Kaylah, Tamara & Dahmion Hines: Lincoln & Malcolm, Son Kelvin Funk, Daughter-in-law Marlene Funk & her children, Scott & Tara: Jack, Brittany & Shane: Chelsea, Daughter-in-law Robyn & husband Scott and her children, Leah & Andy:  Noah, Bryan, Siblings Henry & Rita, Isaac, Helen.
