Alex Smetaniuk Obituary

Alex was born on April 25, 1935 on his parent’s farm in the Maryville, SK district; he was the third of Julian and Eva’s five children. Alex attended the Maryville School after which he helped his father on the farm until October of 1956. At this time, he made his way to Fort St. John to visit his two older brothers. He ended up finding a job building houses and later worked as a carpenter/cabinet maker for the school district. He married Evelyne Lundquist in 1959 and they enjoyed 51 wonderful years together. The couple resided in Fort St. John until 1980 at which time Alex and Evelyne made their decision to move to Victoria. After residing there for years, they decided to move back to the Fort St. John area. This was the precursor to several more moves, ending with Alex moving to Melfort. Throughout his life music played a huge part in Alex’s life. He played the accordion with different bands both in Saskatchewan and British Columbia entertaining at many weddings and social gatherings. Alex and Evelyne enjoyed travelling. Woodworking was another of Alex’s passions. He also spent many hours perfecting his skills on the computer. Alex was a generous, caring person with a great sense of humor and no end of jokes. Alex was predeceased by his loving wife Evelyne, his mother Eva, his father Julian, his brothers Eugene and Morris and his sister Hilda. Left to celebrate his life are his brother Jim, sisters-in-law Judy, Maxine and Molly, his nieces and nephews Gerald, Ron, Tim, Kelvin, Barb, Lisa, Jamie, Kyle, and Tracey together with their families; along with many cousins and friends. Alex will be greatly missed. A private family celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to the Canadian Diabetes Association, or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
