Mark L. Smith Obituary

Mark L. Smith age 94 of Nashua, IA, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center. A public graveside service will be held in the summer of 2021 at a date and time to be announced. Services will be held at Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, IA, with military honors conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post. Arrangements are with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Mark Leroy Smith was born December 7, 1925, in Plainfield, IA, the son of Arlie and Grace (Huggard) Smith. When he graduated high school at age 17 in May of 1943, he was too young to be drafted into the war. Instead of that, he took the train to Washington, D.C. to serve as a file clerk for the FBI. After he turned 18, he was inducted into the Marine Corps. He served in the Russell Islands, Okinawa, and North China. After the war, Mark joined his brother at Watchmaker’s School in Kansas City. He later took a jewelry repair course. While in Kansas City, he met a fellow Iowa veteran, Lucille Nourse, and they were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on November 30, 1947. Mark and Lucille owned a jewelry store in Nashua, and later in Charles City. Actually, the first store in Nashua was a watch repair shop, with the only things for sale being a few watch bands. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Alan) Hasenwinkel of Cedar Falls, Shirley (Scot) Demro of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Matt Hasenwinkel, Megan Hasenwinkel, Brooke Jones, Kelly Crouch, Shane Link, Cade Demro, Cole Demro, Chad Smith, Sara Shaw and Casey Smith; fifteen great-grandchildren. Mark is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. He was a social and outgoing person; a natural storyteller. He enjoyed playing golf, cards, and spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille on September 1, 2012; son, Gary Smith in 1992; three brothers, Wendell, Wayne and Glen Smith; one sister, Edna McNinch.
