Garret Peterson Obituary

A memorial service for Garret Peterson will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 3:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska.

Garret Allen Peterson, 77, of Crawford, Nebraska, passed away October 24, 2020 in Dawes County, NE. Garret was born Jan 14, 1943 to Harold Carl Allen and Aldyth Dokter Peterson at his maternal grandparent’s home in Lemmon, SD.

He grew up on the farm and graduated from Lemmon High School in 1961. Garret served in the National Guard, and during the Berlin Crisis was called to active duty for one year at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He attended Northwest Bible College in Minot, ND. Returning to Lemmon, SD he ran heavy equipment for a road construction company.

He married Jarenda Gale Batson June 24, 1966. To this union two sons were born, Forrest (Woody) and Todd. Garret went into a farming and ranching partnership with his brother, Dennis, raising wheat, Charolais cattle, and Yorkshire hogs. In 1979 Garret moved his family to a farm in Oregon.  He also worked for the State of Oregon maintaining heavy equipment, then worked for Marion County as an equipment mechanic. He enjoyed buying property, fixing it up, selling it – to do it over again.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jarenda Peterson; sons Forrest Peterson of Crawford, NE and Todd (Joyce) Peterson of Protection, KS; sister Ruth Frazier of Charlotte, NC; brothers David (Beverly) Peterson of Salem, OR, Dennis (Vandra) Peterson of Lemmon, SD, Sam (Dee) Peterson of Beckley, WV, and Lowell (Linda) Peterson of Chamberlain, SD; grandchildren Nicole (David) Beck, Brandi (James) Cassells, Lacy (Kelly) Troester, Augustus (Sarah) Peterson, Guy (Katherine) Peterson, Katie (Garrett) Harrington, and April Peterson; and great grandchildren Lee, Grant, Abigail, and one on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Aldyth Peterson; infant brother, Joseph; in-laws Charles and Helen Batson; sister-in-law Patricia Peterson; brother-in-law Robert Frazier; and niece Heidi Peterson Brown.

Garret was a very gentle person, a man of character and excellence. He felt deeply and dealt in kindness. In his quiet strength he boldly verbalized his Christian witness. He cared about his community, his neighbors and all those in his path of life.
