Helen Agnes Schoonmaker

Passed peacefully from this Earth on Monday, October 26 at the age of 96. She was born to the late John and Susie Zazo on the 23rd of June 1924 on the family farm in Merrill, MI. She married Elton Schoonmaker on October 30, 1948. He predeceased her on November 30, 2001. Helen was employed at Eaton Manufacturing during World War II. During those years, she enjoyed going to dances and ice skating at Hoyt Park. Throughout her life, Helen loved children, beautiful flowers, the color red, and Polka music. She also enjoyed family gatherings and tending her flower garden. Helen created a warm and loving home and raised her children well. Helen is survived by her three children, Kathryn (David) Layer, James (Rose) Schoonmaker, Carol Quist, and her brother Joseph (Betty) Zazo Sr. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her siblings Anna (Robert) Mahoney, Mary (William) Langley, Katherine Zazo, John (Shirley) Zazo, and Anthony Zazo. A funeral service will take place at noon on Friday, October 30 at W.L. Case and Co. 4480 Mackinaw Rd., Saginaw, MI. Helen’s grandson, Pastor Casey Layer, will officiate. Family and friends are welcome to visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Helen’s family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Wescourt, Homestead, and Americans Hospice Care for their exceptional care and support.
