Esther E. Sisson Obituary

Esther Elizabeth (Wagaman) Sisson, age 96, passed away Monday morning, October 26, 2020 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Mooresville.  She was a resident of Morgantown and a lifelong resident of Morgan County.

She was born May 13, 1924 in Morgantown, to her parents, the late Oliver Roscoe and Goldie Lillian (Castner) Wagaman.  Esther was a graduate of Morgantown High School and the recipient of the Lion’s Club Scholastic Scholarship in 1942. She married Glenn D. Sisson on December 16,1943 in Morgan County.

She started her working career in 1942 right out of high school by working as an office helper at Sears and Roebuck in Martinsville. In 1950, she left that position and began helping her husband manage their family farm. Esther continued to manage and operator the family farm all by herself for 12 years, growing crops, hay and raising beef cattle and hogs. From 1966 to 1968, she worked as a grocery clerk at the V & V Regal Grocery Store in Morgantown. After working at the grocery store, she worked as the office manager at Gaile's Gas in Morgantown from 1968 to 1983. In 2008, she finally retired after working as a cake decorator, deli clerk, cashier and office manager at the Morgantown IGA Store.

For a short while during the 1940’s and 50’s, she worked at the Red Gold Canning Factory in Trafalgar. Her co-workers nicknamed her “Champion Peeler” because she could peel 146 ten-quart buckets a day.

After retirement, Esther stayed busy as the Morgantown Senior Center Director & also served as a board member for over 10 years. Memberships included the Morgantown Assembly of God Church and the Brown County Antique Machinery Association. She enjoyed quilting, cake decorating and driving her 1944 B John Deer Tractor in many parades. Esther was a collector of salt & pepper shakers, clocks, butterflies and John Deer memorabilia. 

She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn on August 19, 1985 after 42 loving years. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Brummett and Nettie Brummett; brothers, Ray, Willis and Roy Wagaman; brother in laws, William Brummett and Robert Brummett; and a sister in law, Betty Wagaman.

The Revs. Frank Crisswell and Mike Waganer will conduct a funeral service on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
