Joyce Ann Goemaat Deuser 79, of Fairfield went to be with her Lord Sunday, October 25, 2020 at home surrounded by her family.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 10:30A at Suburban Heights Baptist Church, Fairfield, Iowa. Family will be present after the service to greet friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.  Cards and Memorials can be mailed to: Willis Deuser, 2378 Lilac Ct, Fairfield, Iowa.

Joyce was born in Van Buren County, Iowa on December 28, 1940, to Bastiaan “Boss” and Ella (Pope) Goemaat. Her place of birth was affectionately known as the “Pedrick Place” which is located on Jasmine Avenue near Birmingham.  A few months later the family moved to their own farm just west of the Pedrick Place where Joyce spent her childhood. Joyce graduated from the eighth grade at White Schoolhouse #5 which, largely thanks to her efforts, still stands proudly at the intersection of Hwy 16 and Jasmine Avenue.

Joyce went on to attend Birmingham High School where she was known as an excellent basketball player.  She graduated in 1959. There she met her husband of nearly 60 years, Willis Deuser.  They married on February 18, 1961 at Zion Bible (Lutheran) Church near Douds, Iowa. After completing beauty school in Ottumwa, she worked for Harry’s Beauty Shop for eighteen months before her first child was born.  She continued to use this skill throughout her lifetime to help numerous friends and family members. She cleaned houses for over thirty-five years in the Fairfield area. She was a resident of Van Buren County for thirty-eight years before moving to the Fairfield area forty-two years ago.

Joyce woke up every day looking for a way to help someone. No job was too great or too small.  If someone needed a particular item, she would go look to see if she had it to give to them.  She loved giving to others, and she did so even during her last few days on earth. Joyce was a regular attender of Suburban Heights Baptist Church in Fairfield, Iowa.  If the church doors were open, Joyce would most likely be in attendance and helping with an activity or function.

She is survived by her husband Willis and her five children -- Lee (Lori) Deuser, Wharton NJ; Ron (Charissa) Deuser, Kalamazoo, MI; Sandy (Sonny) Hootman, Farmington, IA; Monty (Angie) Deuser, West Des Moines, IA; Heidi (John) Ferguson, Fairfield, IA -- her thirteen grandchildren -- Luke Deuser, Justin Deuser, Nichole Deuser, Chrysten Deuser, Aubrey Deuser, Kaely Deuser, Andrew Sonny Hootman, Benaiah Hootman, Kate Hootman, Micaiah Hootman, Nate Deuser, Becca Deuser and Janell Ferguson – and a brother Dean (Diana) Goemaat and sister-in-law Martha Goemaat.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Bastiaan “Boss” and Ella (Pope) Goemaat, and a brother Donald Goemaat.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Mike and Lisa Schleicher for their care and concern for Joyce during her last years and particularly during her short illness.  Joyce referred to Mike as her sixth child.
