Lawrence Marvin Taylor Jr., age 82, of Greenville, went home to be with his almighty Lord and Savior on October 23, 2020. He was born on March 30, 1938, the son of Reverend Lawrence Sr. and Neva Taylor. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Suzanne Taylor; two sons, Scott (Toni) Taylor and Martin (MaryBeth) Taylor; four grandchildren, Andrew, Sydney, Matthew and Marissa, brother, David Taylor and brother-in-law Clyde Kuntz. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Robert, Joan, and James. Larry was a 1956 graduate of Fenton High School and finished his senior year by winning the Class B state championship in the 880 yard run. After high school he attended Western Michigan University where he received his master’s degree in Education. While attending Western Michigan, Larry was a member of the basketball team for two years and participated on both the track and field and cross country teams for four years. He was a member of the distance medley team that won a NCAA championship and was a member of the Bronco cross country team that won back to back NCAA championships. He began his teaching career at Galien High School where he also coached the varsity football and varsity basketball teams. He led Galien to a MHSAA quarter-final game in basketball while he was still in his early to mid 20’s and also found his bride to be for the next 56 years Suzanne. After six years in Galien he moved to Montague High School for a short stint to both teach and coach the boys varsity basketball team. In the fall of 1967, Larry and Sue moved to Greenville to continue his teaching and coaching career along with raising their small but growing family. While teaching at Greenville he also coached many different sports including basketball, track, cross country and tennis over the next couple of decades until he retired in 1991. These teams included many conference, district and regional championships, state qualifiers and individual state champions. While in Greenville, Larry was a member of Faith Baptist Church and served on the church board. He also served on the Montcalm County Draft Board for multiple years. Larry and many of his buddies went door to door to raise money to build the first track facility at Greenville High School. He started a running club (Greenville Striders) in the mid 70’s as well as the original Danish Festival Roadrun 10K and 5K. He and his wife also owned “The Runnery” which was originally established in Greenville in May 1979. He also established the “Greenville Relays” and the “Ionia-Montcalm County Meet of Champs” track meets with the sponsorship help of the Greenville Daily News. He has been elected into the Greenville High School Athletic Hall of Fame and been awarded a plaque from the MHSAA for serving over 50 years as a registered official for football, basketball, track and cross country events. Upon retiring from the Runnery in 2008, Larry enjoyed spending time with his family, attending as many of the grandchildren's various sporting events as possible and golfing with many dear friends each week spring to fall. He truly loved and cherished his days on the lake, taking his afternoon naps and watching the sunset. As a man of deep faith in the Lord, he always put Christ at the center of his life and led by example and love and respected all. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday July 27, 2021 at Faith Baptist Church in Greenville with Pastor Randy Williams officiating the service along with Hurst Funeral Home directing visitors.
