Mary "Virginia" Azar Obituary

Mary “Virginia” Azar, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother moved to her eternal home with our Lord on October 22, 2020.  She was born on March 30, 1932 in Hereford, Texas.  She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Joe, her children (and spouse), Debra (Tom) Cabe, Joe (Dolly) Azar, Karen (Cliff) Tvede, Greg (Cindy) Azar, Steve Azar (Deann Eaton), and 15 grandchildren.  Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Hamilton and Lillie Jane Still and her younger brothers, Don Still and David Still.

Virginia attended Rankin High School in Rankin, Texas where she was active in basketball, volleyball and tennis.  She attended Texas Tech University where she played volleyball and lettered as a member of the fencing team.  After graduating in Home Economics, Virginia moved to Albuquerque where she got a job with the Southern Union Gas Company.  While demonstrating appliances one late summer day in 1954 she met a handsome appliance salesman who swept her off her feet.  Joe and Virginia were married on Oct 2, 1954.

Virginia was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution having descended from French Huguenots who came to the US in 1700.  While she enjoyed working at home, she also spent time as a substitute teacher, a volleyball coach, a dietitian and a travel counselor. Virginia loved to pay the piano and encouraged her children to play as well.  She was also an excellent seamstress and cook, making lots of clothes and the most wonderful meals for her family.   Perhaps the thing she enjoyed the most was becoming a master gardener.  She loved attending garden shows and working on the flowers, herbs, and trees in her yard.  Her favorite flowers were daylilies, gardenias and bougainvillea which she always had growing in the summer. Virginia loved her family and she worked hard to create a loving, comfortable and safe home for them.

A private celebration of life ceremony will be held on Friday October 30, 2020.
