Maxine Kopp Obituary

Doris Maxine Ferrel Kopp, 94, of Swan Valley and Idaho Falls, passed away October 23, 2020, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.  She was under the care of Brio Home Health & Hospice.

Maxine was born January 31, 1926, in Moreland, Idaho, to George Washington Ferrel and Sarah Emma Francelle Grimmett Ferrel.  She was the youngest of a combined family of 15 children, and was the last surviving sibling.  Her mother died when she was 11 years old.  Maxine later moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho where she graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1944.

One of her best friends in high school lived in Swan Valley, Idaho.  When visiting her friend in Swan Valley, Maxine met her friend’s brother, Glenn Kopp.  Maxine and Glenn married July 28, 1945, and since he was a widower, she had an immediate family with two sons, Zerry and Tony.  They had their home on the Pine Creek bench ranch in Swan Valley.  They had three more children:  Kathleen who died at birth, Sherry, and Ed.

Maxine worked hard on the farm, cooking for large hay crews and large grain crews.  In between preparing huge meals, she drove tractor, raked hay, drove derek horse, drove grain trucks, and much more.  She worked hard!  The job she enjoyed the most was helping with the lambing.  She had the night shift.

During the winters, Maxine and Glenn worked at Pine Basin Ski Lodge.  He ran a rope tow, and she cooked in the lodge and was famous for her delicious chili.

In 1966, they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Maxine worked at Fashion Fabric until 1985.  She was an accomplished seamstress who loved to sew for her family, and could sew anything, including, clothes, toys, quilts, and Christmas ornaments.

Family was her biggest love!  She loved her kids and especially her grandkids passionately!  She loved spending time with them, talking, laughing, and having fun!  She always told them, “Grandma loves you” while giving them a hug or a pat on the hand or back. “A Bushel and a Peck” was one of her favorite songs to sing to them.  In the basement of their Idaho Falls home, there was a pool table and ping pong table which the grandkids and other visitors enjoyed.  Their home was always open and welcoming to everyone.

Maxine liked to look her best, and dress well.  She always had her nails beautifully manicured and painted, and looked forward to having her hair styled once a week.

She had played basketball in high school and loved watching professional basketball and football games, rooting for the Utah Jazz and the Denver Broncos. The grandkids loved it when Maxine and Glenn went to Roosevelt to watch them play baseball.  They would sit in their truck and cheer the kids on and honk their horn when they did something great.

Doing crossword puzzles was one of her favorite hobbies, and she looked forward to the Post Register newspaper each day so she could complete all the puzzles and brain teasers.  She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and listening to Daniel O’Donnell sing.  She was a great cook, and family and friends could always look forward to biscuits and gravy and all kinds of wonderful things to eat!

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A work transfer in 1985 took Glenn and Maxine to Escondido, California, for a year.  After they retired, they would spend each winter in Garibaldi, Oregon; each spring in Roosevelt, Utah; and each summer in Swan Valley.  They were married for 51 years, had 12 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.  Glenn passed away in 1996.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Ed (Joslyn) Kopp and Tony Kopp, both of Swan Valley; 9 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Kopp; son, Zerry Kopp; daughters, Sherry Sims Asay and Kathleen Kopp; grandchildren, Shellie Kopp, Travis Kopp, and Jason Sims; great-grandchildren, Maxx and Lalo; her parents, and all of her 14 brothers and sisters.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the caregivers at Good Samaritan Society of Idaho Falls, and the nurses on the fifth floor of EIRMC for the kind and loving care they gave Maxine.

Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2020, at the Swan Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at www.cff.org, the Community Food Basket of Idaho Falls at 245 N. Placer Avenue, Idaho Falls, ID 83402, or your favorite charity.
