Lowell Bartel

Lowell E. Bartel, Gladbrook, IA, passed away at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA on Thursday, October 22, 2020 of natural causes.  Lowell was born February 8, 1946 in rural Kasson, MN to Chester and Ethel Bartel.  He grew up on a dairy farm with two older sisters.  Lowell graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School, Kasson, MN and Winona State College, Winona, MN majoring in history and business.  He married Candace O’Meara on March 21, 1969.    Lowell enlisted in the US Army and proudly served in the 82nd Airborne Division, Ft. Bragg NC, during the Vietnam War.  After leaving active duty, he continued serving in the Army Reserve until his retirement in 1992.  Military awards he received were the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star Device, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Hourglass Device, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Oversees Training Ribbon (awarded nine times) and the Parachute Badge.  He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of active duty and reserve service.  He was a member of the Gladbrook American Legion, Tama VFW, AMVETS, DAV, PVA, MOAA and the Vietnam Veterans of America.  Lowell and Candace raised their family in Conrad, IA.  He worked at the McCubbin Seed Farm, Green Mountain, IA; then as a soybean production manager for Clemens Seeds/Pfizer, Beaman, IA; then as a regional sales manager for Merschman Seeds, West Point, IA and as Adjutant at the Iowa Veterans Home until he retired due to health issues.  In retirement he and Candace enjoyed living lakeside in rural McGregor, MN (the great northland) for 20 years before returning to Iowa four years ago to be closer to their family.  Lowell enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, reading and spending time with his family.  He was a member of the Chapel United Methodist Church, Gladbrook.  Lowell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Candace, Gladbrook; sons Eric Bartel, Toledo, IA and Matthew Bartel (Mindy Savage), Green Mountain, IA; grandchildren Kendra Savage, Marshalltown; Bryce Bartel (Alexis Black), Green Mountain, Kenzie, and Bryleigh Bartel, Green Mountain; and Kansas Woods, Mountain View, MO; great-grandson, Cayden Savage, Green Mountain; sisters Marcia (Paul) Wiener, Loveland, CO, and Marian (Dick) Greene, Hastings, MN; aunt Lorraine Davis, Onawa, IA and several nieces and a nephew.  He is preceded in death by his parents.   A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 30 at 11:00 A.M. at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown.  Visitation will take place Thursday, October 29 at 5:00-7:00 P.M.  Private interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Home Cemetery, Marshalltown, IA prior to the service.  Memorials may be directed in Lowell's name to the Iowa Veterans Home.  For additional questions or to leave a condolence, please visit www.mitchellfh.com or call 641-844-1234.
