Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Anthony (Tony) Joseph Carroll on the morning of October 16, 2020 at Agapé Hospice in Calgary after a lengthy illness. He will be dearly missed by his wife Joan, children Jocelyn (Mark), Ben (Leah) and grandson, Andrew. Tony was predeceased by parents Joseph and Ethel, and older siblings Jocelyn and Bobby.

Tony was born on September 28, 1929 in Rathfarnham (Dublin), Ireland and emigrated to Canada in 1953. There he joined Montreal’s expat Irish community where he met Joan. They were married September 30, 1960 at St. Patrick’s Church in Montreal. Tony was known for his excellence in sales first with Cunard in Montreal, then with Blondo which brought the family to Calgary.  The wandering spirit that brought Dad to Canada was part of family life with car trips to the Rockies, east, and west coasts favoured for summer holidays. Golf figured prominently in Dad’s life and he worked at Priddis Golf Course for several years after retiring. We will miss the twinkle in Grandad’s eye, his stories, and his fondness for every dog that was a companion over his lifetime.

Tony’s faith was important to him, he was a parishioner at St. Anthony’s Parish for many years, and active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The challenges of the pandemic meant that Dad’s last months were spent away from Mum and home, which was a loss for our parents. Tony and Joan quietly celebrated their 60th anniversary at Agapé. The family is very grateful for the safety and comfort that he had at Agapé Hospice. Thank you to nursing and support staff at Agapé for excellent care, and Dr. Jeremy deBruyn for the regular visits that brightened Dad’s day. Thanks also to Dr. Andrew Eddie for many years of care and the support of AHS homecare.

Due to pandemic travel restrictions and for the safety of all we are delaying a Funeral Mass and gathering. In the meantime, please know that Tony would appreciate a prayer said on his behalf. If you have a story to share please do so on Dad's Tribute Wall.
