Earl Newton Cole

Earl (Red) Newton Cole, World War II Navy Veteran and avid fisherman, passed away at the age of 95 on October 19, 2020. Earl was born on July 12, 1925 in Lewisburg, Kansas. He is one of eight children born to George Rufus Cole and Josephine Mabel Moody and he spent most of youth helping the family with farming throughout California and into Fruitland, Idaho where they settled. At the age of 18, Earl enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He was stationed in Okinawa and a few other places in the Pacific, serving with the 101st Construction Battalion also known as the Seabees. He was honorably discharged after his 2-year service in 1945. After his return from the War, Earl worked various jobs in Idaho and Washington until meeting his wife Susie Violet Tillotson who he married on January 21, 1948. They were married for 67 years and had four children, David, Susan, Lynette, and Michael. While raising their family, Earl ranched and owned a slaughter house in Burns, Oregon before moving to Weiser, Idaho where he worked for the county. He spent much of his career as a field man for the Co-op and Johnson and Bryant before retiring from Appleton Produce. Earl had a few hobbies but was most known for his love of fishing, tending his fruit trees, and building folding tables for his family and friends. He has fished up and down the West Coast but his favorite spots were Hells Canyon and Alaska. He loved to spend time fishing with his friends and family then sharing his stories when he came home. Earl became very active in the LDS church at age 75 and loved his membership in the Weiser First Ward. He spent many hours serving his community. Earl was preceded in death by his wife Susie as well as his brothers, Bernard Cole, Walter Cole, and Joseph Cole and sisters Gertrude Reed and Myrtle Sinclair. Earl is survived by his brother Claude Cole and his sister Ethel Maine as well as his children David Cole (married to Crystal), Susan Bybee (married to Randy), Lynette Neeld, and Michael Cole (married to Laurie). He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Earl’s funeral will be held at the Weiser Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel on Monday October 26, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held at 10:00 am before the service. Arrangements under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home.
