Reginald Gregory Rivers Obituary

Reginald Rivers was born on April 24, 1946 to the late Ett Rivers and late Virginia Joe Stewart in Harlem, New York. Both Ett and Virginia would later re-marry which would only expand the number of family and friends throughout Reginald’s life who would affectionately call him “Reggie”. A native New Yorker, Reggie grew up in Harlem, claiming the block of 151st as his home turf, attended Junior High 115 and George Washington High School. In addition to being a bright student, Reggie was also a talented basketball player, holding his own on some of the renowned basketball courts in Harlem. Reggie would also spend the summers with Ett, stepmother, Gladys in Bishopville South Carolina After graduating high school, Reggie was drafted by the United States Army and served in the 9th Infantry for his country dutifully in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. After his return to the United States, Reggie furthered his education, attending the Fashion Institute of Technology and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He subsequently completed a bachelor’s degree from John Jay. Combining his street smarts with his formal education and charismatic disposition, over the course of his career Reggie served as a counselor at Rikers Island, Project Return and the Salvation Army where he concentrated in behavioral modification and helped a number of people enrich and better their lives. He retired from the Salvation Army as a Supervisor in 2014 He shared over 26 years of his life with his loving partner, friend and support, Diane Harris-Rivers, in St. Albans, Queens. Beyond his love for basketball, Reggie also enjoyed football, traveling abroad and to the best casinos around the United States, collecting comic books, action movies, live music, dancing, fine clothing and was an avid reader of science fiction. Reggie also enjoyed going to salsa clubs to listen to the music and work the dance floor with his smooth moves. He loved to take trips with the family, just get on a plane and go he got spoiled. He loved to make people smile and laugh, he was a comedian in his own right, minus the pay. His memory will be cherished by a host of family members and friends both near and far including: Aunt Roberta Rivers and Aunt Dandy Joe; Natalie Rivers; Diane Harris-Rivers; Stacey HarrisStyles, Khoury Styles, Maurice Styles, Major Styles, Raymond Harris, Michelle Johnson, Rene Collins and Adrianne Stewart. While Reggie left this world the morning of October 18, 2020 and may be gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts. He will be missed by all.
