John Andrew McVey Sr., of Leisure Knoll, Manchester, NJ passed away peacefully at his home on October 20, 2020 at the age of 96. Predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Hawks McVey, brothers, Michael McVey and Paul McVey and sister Theresa Smith. He is survived by his five children – Betty Naegele (Don) Gundred, John (Terry) McVery Jr., Patricia (Gerry) Dickerson, Kevin (Donna) McVey and Mary (Leon) Luchkovitz; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. John, the oldest of nine children, leaves behind his sisters Bernadette Fredericks, Susan Loia, Margaret Vogt, and Cecelia Shannon, plus many nieces and nephews. Born in Uddingston (Glasgow), Scotland in 1924 to parents John Gerald McVey and Mary Ann Allen McVey, he immigrated with his family in 1927 to Madison, NJ. After graduating from Seton Hall Prep, he joined the US Navy in 1943 to serve in the Pacific Ocean during WWII, spending two years aboard a sub chaser. Soon after returning, he began his college education at Vanderbilt University where he met his future wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Hawks. They married in 1947 in Madison, NJ. Upon completing a degree in Business from Seton Hall university, John worked for Crucible Steel, Fagersta Steel and Speed/Erasteel. We nicknamed him “our man of steel” which has more to do with his strength of character than his occupational endeavors. John raised his family in New Providence until his retirement in 1986, when he & Betty moved to Leisure Knoll, where they were active members of St. John’s Church, Lakehurst. John was also a member of Knights of Columbus. He was a man of faith, integrity, and a true gentleman.

John had many hobbies which included fishing, golf, photography, and with his interest in genealogy, he enjoyed connecting with relatives while learning more about his roots in Ireland and Scotland. He always considered family an integral part. As a caring and loving husband and father, we are all grateful to have had him in our lives for so long, but will miss his warm affection, paternal guidance and strength through adversity. Visitation is Sunday 1-5 PM at Oliverie Funeral Home 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester. Funeral Liturgy is Monday 10 AM at St John’s Church, Lakehurst with private entombment to follow at St Teresa of Avila Cemetery, Summit. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John A.
