Marie MacDonald

North Sydney

With heavy hearts and loving memories, we regret to announce the passing of our sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend Catherine Marie MacDonald, age 78, on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Northside Community Guest Home.

Born in Scotch Lake on April 4, 1942, Marie was the daughter of the late John Hugh and Beatrice “Babe” (Bagg) MacDonald.  In her earlier years, Marie worked at Jabalee’s Grocery Store and Canadian Tire.  Marie joined the Sisters of Charity in 1970 and remained there for 17 years.  She moved to Halifax and worked as a CNA and later a chaplain at the Victoria General Hospital and Halifax Infirmary.  Throughout her career she spent many hours comforting the sick and dying and their families.  Marie had a special gift of compassion and caring.  She made lifelong friends and heart-filled memories with the people she helped and hearts she touched.  Marie was a strong woman, a survivor of breast cancer and an environmental illness.  Marie enjoyed nature, reading, Cape Breton music and her family.  She loved living in St. Margaret’s Bay, walking on the beach with friends and dogs.

Marie is survived by her three sisters; Delia MacIntyre, Boularderie, Anne (Sandy) Conway, North Sydney, Cathy (Art) Ivey, Scotch Lake, four brothers; Joe (Anna) MacDonald, Michael (Anne) MacDonald, Vincent (Debbie) MacDonald, all of Scotch Lake and Barry (Cheryl) MacDonald, Ingonish; also many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother David MacDonald, sister-in-law Sandra (Iannetti), brother-in-law Michael MacIntyre, niece Christene MacDonald and special friend Elizabeth Dingwall.

The family would to extend our thanks and appreciation to her family at the Northside Guest Home who treated her with respect and love.  Also, special thanks to Dr. Bill MacDonald for all his help.

A private family viewing will be held in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.  A funeral mass for Marie will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Rev. Michel Exalant officiating. Due to Covid-19 restrictions a limited amount of seating is available at church, the wearing of masks and social distancing are mandatory.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
