Virginia L. Aten, 89, of Ottumwa, died at 11:55 a.m. October 12, 2020 at Vista Woods Care Center. She was born November 22, 1930 in Humeston, IA to Carl G. and Hazel M. Morrow Aten. A 1952 graduate of St. Joseph School of Nursing, Virginia was with the Sisters of St. Francis Order for 10 years in Maryville, MO. She worked as a visiting nurse in Kansas City, KS as a surgical RN at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Shawnee Mission, KS, and at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa and at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. Virginia was a volunteer at the Seventh Day Adventist Community Center. When Virginia was living in her home in Ottumwa, she loved gardening, cooking and her beloved dog, Rusty. When visiting her brother in Maine Virginia loved boating and fishing. She loved her outings with her friends to eat and shop. She was a wonderful daughter who cared for her mother, until her death, but most of all she loved her family and will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Surviving is her brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Deirdre Aten of Manchester, NH; nieces, Joyce (Nick) Schwartz, Janice (Dan) Schwee, Mandy (Korey) Knote, Kelsey Aten and nephews, Edward (Shoshanna Ungerleider) Aten, Conor Aten along with great-nieces and great-nephews, Kara Schwee, Casey Schwee and Brent Schwartz. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Pamela Kay Aten and a brother, Mardis Aten. Limited open visitation will be 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 21st at Reece Funeral Home Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, October 22nd, at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jeremy Clark officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Community Center.
