Elizabeth Hubbard Obituary

Elizabeth Hubbard was born Elizabeth Tardy on May 14, 1919, in Hurts County, Virginia to John Henry and Susie Tardy. She was the second youngest of their eleven children. She was called home to the Lord on October 12, 2020, at 11:38AM, at the age of 101. Elizabeth was a teenager when she first heard the good news and the name of Jesus. She repented of her sins and was baptized in Jesus' name by the late Elder Barber of the Glorious Church. In 1942, at the age of 23, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, Bible witnessed, and speaking with tongues as the Spirit of God gave utterance. Some time after, Elizabeth met and married Nelson Hubbard. They worked together for many years before they relocated to Washington, DC, where together they worked for three years as a butler and a cook for Justine Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court. From there they traveled to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where they worked in the summers and spent winters back in Virginia. In 1960, Brother and Sister Hubbard permanently relocated to Atlantic City, where they owned and operated a gas station and a small candy store located on New York Avenue. Sister Hubbard's store, JJ Johnson's Store, remained in business until 1983. She remained married to Nelson Hubbard until his death in 1974. In 1979, the Lord led Sister Hubbard to Shiloh Temple Pentecostal Assembly (now Shiloh Temple Apostolic Cathedral), where she was given the right hand of fellowship by Bishop James A. Waiters and Mother Ethel Waiters. In the latter part of 1983, she was appointed Deaconess of the church and continued to serve in various other capacities. She was a member of the missionary choir and the mass choir, former vice-president of the pastor's aide department, a secretary of the usher board, a key usher on fourth Sundays, and she headed the baptismal and the communion committees until she could no longer physically work in the church house. Deaconess Elizabeth Hubbard will be fondly remembered by her vivacious renditions of If You Can't Help Me, Lift the Savior Up and Down on My Knees as well as her extra dose of energy as she sang on the choirs and marched as an usher. Deaconess Hubbard served the Lord with all her might and despite her age she was one of the liveliest members of the church. Deaconess Hubbard had tremendous love for her family and did everything in her power to keep them together and to teach them to love one another. She was extremely close to her daughter, Sister Shirley Marie, and until she was unable, they spoke on the phone and/or saw each other every day. Deaconess Hubbard cooked full course meals every Sunday and hosted most holiday dinners until she was 95 years old. She sometimes fed more than 11 people weekly on a fixed income and if extra people showed up, she would quickly whip up more food and make it stretch until everyone was satisfied. She was also known to open her home to her friends and they would enjoy a hot meal, laughs and great conversation. Deaconess Elizabeth Hubbard is predeceased by: her parents; ten siblings and her husband. She leaves to cherish her memories; her one and only beloved daughter, Sister Shirley Burruss (Deacon Charles Burruss) of Absecon, New Jersey; five grandchildren, Gayle Brown of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Howard Williams (Linda) of Atlanta, Georgia; Douglass Williams (Helen) of Orlando Florida, Robin Hopkins (Lloyd) of Mays Landing, New Jersey, and Kris Williams (Shirley L.) of Orlando Florida; twelve great-grandchildren; twenty-one great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be 11AM, Saturday, October 24, 2020, Shiloh Apostolic Cathedral, 505 Madison Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may call from 10AM. In the church there will be a limit to the number of people allowed inside. Face coverings are required. Interment will follow the funeral services in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville, New Jersey. All arrangements are entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Homes, Atlantic City, where condolences may be left at www.greenidgefuneralhomes.com.
