James Eckford Campbell Obituary

James Eckford Campbell was born July 10, 1939 in Starksville, MS. He was the third of seven children born to the late Jimmy Lee and Pearlie (Hogan) Campbell. He accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. James moved to Ann Arbor as a teenager where he attended and graduated from Ann Arbor High. In April of 1959 he married Shirley Teague and three children were born to this union. He worked for the City of Ann Arbor for several years until he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. In Minneapolis he worked for Housted Steel until his retirement and he returned to Ann Arbor in 1995.


After returning to Ann Arbor, he united with St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. James was a faithful member who loved his church and his pastor. He enjoyed singing with and fellowshipping with the Men of Praise Choir. His hobbies were fishing, barbequing, dominos and playing cards. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brother Campbell went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 17th, at home with his family.


In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers; Jesse Campbell and Roy Campbell; four sisters, Annie Johnson, Katie Greer, Ferry Dean Campbell and her twin.


He leaves to cherish his precious memory one son, Gregory (Petreya) Campbell, two daughters: Kimberly Barnett and Jacquleyn Campbell. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Charlene Campbell and Janet Campbell; one brother-in-law, David Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; one special niece, Freida Campbell and one special friend, Otis Richardson.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 31, 2020 at 1:00 pm at New Testament Baptist Church located at 1230 West Michigan Avenue, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. Masks are mandatory and COVID-19 safety rules and regulations will be enforced. Please follow the COVID-19 rules of 6 feet apart. Please allow the family time to be seated prior to the starting of the service.
