Carlton Edward Buehrly Obituary

KIVA, MI – Carlton Edward Buehrly, age 92, of Kiva, entered eternal life Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at UP Health System – Marquette. Born April 29, 1928, in Detroit, son of Edward and Jennett Buehrly, Carl was raised on the family farm in Cass City, Michigan, where he learned the value of work at an early age and developed a strong lifelong work ethic. As a youth, he longed to drive the large farm equipment but his father deemed it too dangerous, so Carl was placed in charge of a team of horses to do his portion of the farm work. Growing up in a farming community, Carl also belonged to the local 4-H Club. Following graduation from Cass City High School, Carl was hired as a herdsman with Jensen Farms in Marlette. It was there he met their secretary, Carolyn Satory, who became the love of his life. The couple was married on October 28, 1950, in Sandusky, Michigan, making their first home at Jensen Farms. Carl later began a 20 year employment with McKone Farms in Clarklake, where he performed a multitude of farm tasks including working with registered Hereford cattle and the company’s fruit orchards. Recognized for his agricultural talents, particularly with cattle, Michigan State University on their third attempt to hire Carl finally succeeded. In December 1973, Carl became herdsman for the Michigan State University Experiment Station in Chatham. After ten years at Chatham, MSU again asked him to relocate, this time to East Lansing to manage their herds involved in the MSU Embryo Transplant Program. In his new job, Carl worked with veterinarians and students in a team approach. He enjoyed mentoring the students and earned the respect of students and peers alike. Retiring at age 65, Carl and Carolyn purchased property in the Kiva area. In retirement, Carl assisted his son, Bob, with his farm in Traunik, naming their combined cattle and farm operation “Buehrly’s Buckeye Spur Farm”. Throughout the years, Carl enjoyed mentoring numerous students and was generous with the sharing of his time and knowledge. He especially liked to attend cattle events and enjoyed interaction with anyone, especially youth, concerning anything agricultural in nature. His hobbies and interests centered around being an enthusiastic Spartan fan and work, work, work! Carl was a member of the Michigan Cattlemen’s Association and was their 2008 recipient of the Cattle Businessman of the Year award. He was deeply loved by his family and friends, and has enriched the lives of many he encountered. Carl had a long and fruitful life full of hard work, warmth and humor and although he will be greatly missed, there is no doubt that he left this world a better place. Carl is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carolyn; his children, Robert (Vickie) Buehrly of Traunik, Colleen (Mike) Portale of Avon Lake, OH, and Mary Lynn Buehrly of Mason; his grandchildren, Bridgette (John) Woodham, Tiffany (Terry) Johnson, Bethany Buehrly, Andrew (Chelsea) Portale, and Ashley Portale; and great-grandchildren, Clay Dean Johnson, Stella Rae Johnson, John Hunter Woodham, and Audrey Kathleen Portale. Private family services will be held. Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. Interment will be made in the spring at the Juhl Cemetery, Marlette, Michigan.
