Mary Marjean Mitchell Obituary

Mary Marjean Mitchell of Mustang departed this world peacefully on May 22nd, 2017. She is finally “Together Again” in Heaven with her husband Mitch. Marjean was born on June 30th, 1930 to J. Cline and Cora House and was raised in Bethany where she graduated in 1948. Mitch and Marjean were married in 1949 and shortly thereafter Mitch was called to duty in the Air Force. They spent the next twenty years living in many places including Morocco and England. During those years Marjean was active in Family Services and a program for children with special needs called “Children Have Potential”, earning the Air Force Volunteer of the Year award in 1965. After Mitch’s retirement they lived for a while in Warr Acres, eventually moving to Mustang. Marjean went back to college and completed her Associates in Accounting at OCCC at age 53, shortly after Mitch’s death in 1983. She then went on to work at the Canadian County Clerk’s office as First Deputy from 1985-1992, payroll & benefits specialist from 1992-1995, Supervisor with the 2000 Census, and Oklahoma County Clerk’s benefits department from 2004 to 2005. A lifelong Yellow Dog Democrat, Marjean was active in many aspects, volunteering on many campaigns, serving on committees at county, congressional district, and state levels, even attending the 1984 DNC in San Francisco. Marjean was also a member of the OKC Southside Democratic Women’s Club. She served as Credentials Committee Chair for the 1999 State Democratic Party Convention, an event that made national news because Marjean fought against inaccurate credentialing, taking the protest to the DNC…she won of course! In 2002 Marjean was inducted into the ODP’s Activists Hall of Fame. That same year she was also awarded the Andrus award for her 10 years of service to AARP. In 2008 the 5th Congressional District Democrats honored Marjean with their highest tribute when they awarded her the Keith Leftwich Service Award. A member of the Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, Marjean joins in heaven her parents, son Jay C. Mitchell, and the love of her life Melvin L. “Mitch” Mitchell. She is survived by her sister Janet Short and husband James, son Scott Mitchell and wife Minda, daughter Janet Wilson and husband Rusty. She is also survived by Granddaughters Lauren Brown and husband Scott, Lacy Theissen and husband Jeremy, Alyssa Wilson, and Grandson Mitchell Wilson. She also leaves behind her two newest loves, Great Grandson Teddy Brown and Great Grandbaby-to-be Theisen. Services will be Monday, June 5th, 2:00pm at McNeil’s Funeral Home in Mustang with interment following in Mustang Cemetery where she will be reunited with Mitch. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Phelan McDermid Syndrome Foundation at 22Q13.org or the Mustang Parks Foundation.
