<p>Charles Edward Swingle, 79, of Covington, passed away at 4:15am on Thursday, October 15, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born on January 12, 1941 in Clinton, Indiana, the son of Leroy Jr. and Ruth (Gressmire) Swingle. He was united in marriage to Darleen Galloway on April 28, 1963, she survives.</p> <p>He will be dearly missed by his wife, Darleen; son, Matthew (Kris) Swingle of Oakwood, IL; daughters, Tamera (Tony) DeMoss and Kimberly Eaton both of Covington; sisters, Mary Martha (John) Unekis of Columbia, SC, Shirley Wood of Florence, KY, Beverly Jane (Jim) Brown of Covington, Charlotte Dowers of Cayuga and Roberta (Kevin) Gallagher of Cayuga; half-brothers, Brian Swingle (Wendy) of Indianapolis and Mark (Debbie) Swingle of Perrysville; grandchildren, Allyson (Scottie) Burchett, Rebecca (Ethan) Walan, Jacob Eaton, Seth DeMoss and Zachary Eaton; great grandchildren, Lucas and Zander Burchett; he is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Corbin Eaton.</p> <p>Charles spent his childhood years in the Perrysville/Coal Branch areas. He graduated from Perrysville High School in 1959 and loved to bragged he was a PHS Eagle. Charles join the United States Navy Reserves when he was 16 then served active duty in the Navy after he graduated high school. He proudly served on the USS Topeka during the Cuban Missle Crisis. He worked 36 years at Olin/Flexel in the slitting and machining departments. He was a member of Covington-Salem United Methodist Church enjoying the services, socials, and meals. Camping with family was a favorite summertime activity along with family reunions. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, photography, attending his kids and grandkids events, figuring out how to fix things, and stopping by Benjamin&#39;s restaurant a couple times a week for breakfast and local updates. He adored his family and all of his friends. He cherished every moment he spent with them.</p> <p>A celebration of Charles life will be held at 3:00pm (EST), Sunday, October 18, 2020, at Covington-Salem United Methodist Church, 1651 Salem Church Rd. Covington, IN. Officiating the service will be Pastor Ralph Brian. Visitation will be held from 1:00pm to 3:00pm (EST) prior to his service at the church. It is kindly requested that face masks be worn, and social distancing is practiced by those in attendance of the visitation and/or service. Per Charles&#39; wish, he will be cremated following his services.</p> <p>Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Covington, Indiana 420 3 rd&nbsp;St. Covington, Indiana 47932, is assisting the family in making arrangements. Memorial donations in Charles&#39; honor may be given to Covington-Salem United Methodist Church or to the Western Indiana Community Foundation for charitable projects in the Perrysville or Covington areas.
