Marvin De Jong Obituary

Mr. Marvin De Jong, age 83, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, October 15, 2020, at his residence. There will be a funeral service on Monday, October 19, at 10:00am, at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Todd De Rooy will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Marvin was born on November 19, 1936, in Orange City, the son of Peter S. and Tracy (Faber) De Jong. He was raised in Orange City, where he attended the Orange City Christian School and the Western Christian High School in Hull. He was united in marriage to Delores June Kuiper on November 5, 1957 in Hospers. They made their home in Orange City, where he drove truck for his father and worked at the Farmer’s Elevator. He then worked for area plumbers until 1981, when he started his own business, De Jong Plumbing and Heating. Following retirement in 2005, he volunteered at the Orange City Area Health System and Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministries. Mr. De Jong was a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he taught Sunday School and had been a deacon and elder. He was currently a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church. Marv and Delores helped at the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City for ten years and loved traveling together and enjoying God’s creation. He enjoyed fishing with MarDel, Gilbert and Doug, camping with his family, and playing Heartland Strategy and Rook. Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years; his three children, Clarine, and her husband, Doug Koedam, of Lone Tree; Donna, and her husband, Gilbert Dykstra, of Honey Creek; and Marvin Del, of Sioux Center; twelve grandchildren, Angie, and her husband, Chuck Miller; Amy, and her husband, Whitney Hartman; Jeremy Koedam; Jessica, and her husband, Jordon Cave; Seth Dykstra, and his wife, Laura; David Dykstra, and his wife, Ruth; Michael Dykstra, and his wife, Elizabeth; Rebecca, and her husband, Micah Swab; Joseph Dykstra; Levi Dykstra, and his wife, Hannah; Daniel Dykstra; and Nathanael Dykstra; 23 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wilbur De Jong, of Orange City; and two sisters, Arlene Menninga, of Bullhead City, Arizona; and Rose Te Grotenhuis, of Orange City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Peter S. De Jong, Samuel De Jong, Raymond De Jong, Julius De Jong, and Marion De Jong; a sister, Rena Kloosterman; Delores’ brother, John Kuiper; and her sister, Fritz Haarsma. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Orange City Christian School and the Luke Society.
