Martha Hulet Hamer McGough of North Augusta, South Carolina died on Tuesday, October 13, 2020. She was born on April 8, 1944 in Eufaula, Alabama. She attended New Hope High School where she graduated as Valedictorian of her class. She continued her education at Auburn University, completing both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Home Economics and Early Childhood Development, and was the first woman in the University’s history to be tapped into the prestigious Mortar Board honor society.

In 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, James Russell McGough, and together they had 3 children: Mary Evelyn, Margaret Anne and Russell Hamer.

Martha worked as a beloved high school teacher for over 40 years and was dedicated to her students. Many she coached went on to win national honors through the FCCLA Program she led. Over the years, her work was recognized with multiple awards including Teacher of the Year Award and The Golden Apple.

Martha was endlessly creative and gave 100% to everything she did. She was loved by her Grace United Methodist Church family, where she especially enjoyed creating devotionals for her Sunday School class. She was a lifelong avid gardener who continued to attend horticultural classes she loved dearly as evidenced by her beautiful garden. More than anything, in recent years, her favorite pastime was traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Martha is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jim, her three children and two grandchildren Gabriel James Rossi and Hudson Danger McGough. She was predeceased by her parents William Hubert Hamer and Edna Evelyn Hamer and her brother William Stovall Hamer.

A funeral service will be held at New Hope Funeral Home in New Hope, Alabama on Saturday, October 17, at 1:00 PM. Visitation from 11:00-1:00 preceding. Flowers may be sent in Martha’s honor to New Hope Funeral Home, 2500 Oak Grove Road, New Hope, AL.

Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery.
