Jesse James Hughes, Sr., 92, of 1817 Jonesville Highway, Union, SC and formerly of 101 Lakewood Drive, Union, SC passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 14, 2020 in Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.  A native of Union County, SC, he was the widower of Veolia Hunter Hughes and the son of the late James “Cooter” Hughes and Viola Worthy Hughes.  He was a member of Maple Ridge Baptist Church.  He was a retiree of the South Carolina Department of Transportation and was educated in the Union County School System. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Daisy Mae Lott and Elizabeth Lindsay; and three brothers, Reverend Hubert Hughes, Albert Hughes, and Deacon Clarence “Hugo” Hughes Sr. Those who remain to cherish his memory include two sons, Eddie Dean (Frieda) Byrd, Sr. of Spartanburg, SC and Jesse James Byrd, III  of Pacolet; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Joyce Thomas Hughes of Pacolet, SC; one aunt, Viola Hughes (Maurecee) Jones of Union, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Pearl Lott Crawford, 103 Pinetree Lane, Union, SC.  Graveside service will be held Sunday, October18, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Maple Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, 635 Neal Shoals Road, Union, SC.  Arrangements are with Community Mortuary, 361 Meansville Road, Union, SC.
