Lyle Addison Shantz

SHANTZ: Lyle A. July 19, 1920 – October 13, 2020 Lyle Shantz, aged 100 years, of Watrous, SK passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at the Watrous Hospital. Lyle was born on the family farm near Guernsey, SK. to his parents Addison and Priscilla Shantz. It was there on land homesteaded by his father and uncle that he, along with his brothers Stanley and Arnold developed his love for the land and farming. It was where his work ethic was formed and the importance of church and community involvement developed. Lyle attended Mohawk school for his early schooling and finished with grade 12 at Rosthern Junior College. He married Jean Hawes in 1948. They started their own farm yard where they raised their four children, Janet, Donald, Sandra and Lucille. Lyle was actively involved with his local church, Sharon Mennonite, until its closing in 1999, and then Philadelphia Mennonite became their home church. Some of Lyle’s community involvements were serving as councilor and then reeve for Usborne Municipality. He was a founding member of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. He served on the Watershed board as well as Manitou Lodge board. Lyle was actively involved in 4-H, where achievement days were often hosted on the family farm. Over his lifetime of farming Dad saw many changes. He started out as a young man working on the family farm. He and his brother Arnold (Unc) started a farming partnership that lasted for many years, and as time went on they were joined by their sons, Don and Ross. Following the death of Ross in 2014, Don, Pat and Ross’s wife Betty, along with the next generation continued the family farm. Dad enjoyed watching the cycle of sowing, growing and harvest, and had many memories to share of his early years of farming. Dad enjoyed road trips, whether it was south to Arizona, to the mountains or visits to the family and friends. One significant trip was to Africa with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in 1979. In the last few years the trips were to the farm to check on the crops and visit the great grandkids. Dad and Mom moved to Watrous in 1981 where many new friendships were formed through activities including golf, curling and coffee row. Those friendships were greatly valued. Lyle was predeceased by his wife, Jean in 2012 and grandson, Trevor Shantz in 1991. He will be greatly missed by his family, his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Janet (John) Rempel of Elm Creek, MB, their children: Tanis (Travis) Malkoske, Carla (Derek) Bond, and daughter Kiera, Denise (Jessi) Lund. Don (Pat) Shantz of Manitou Beach, SK, their children: Theresa (Michael) Ardell, their children Carson, Jordan, Glenda (Keith) Siemens, their children Luke, Joshua, Sarah, Abigail, Elizabeth, Dian (Shawn) Boisvert, their children Hailey, Kole, Spencer. Lucille (Howard) Toews of Watrous, SK, their children: Warren (Cyndy) Toews their children Finnley, Jett, Brad (Angel) Toews, their children Bronc, Sunshine, Honey, Spur, Devin (Laura) Toews, their children Wyatt, Wren.
