Leroy (Lee) Allen Smith died on October 13, 2020 at Shannon Medical Center surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held from 9am to 8pm, Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Shaffer Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2pm, Monday, October 19, 2020 at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Leroy was born to Clarence and Dorothea Smith in Clovis, NM on February 16, 1944. The family immediately moved back to their home state of Minnesota and lived there until he was five years old. They moved back to Clovis to build their home. Leroy attended all thirteen grades of school in Clovis. He attended ENMU in Portales until he got his military draft notice so he joined the Navy. He came home to marry his sweetheart, Tresa Bradford. They moved to Camp Pendleton for three months before he was sent to Vietnam for thirteen months. He actually was never on a ship but spent three out of the four years attached to the Marines. He was a Navy corpsman and while in Vietnam, served with the 1st marine air wing in DeNang. He alternately worked at the field hospital and flew Medical evacuations. He finished his military career at El Toro Marine Base. He lived in Anaheim for fourteen years. He worked for Nabisco for ten years, plus went to Cal state Fullerton and graduated with a B.A. in business. His two sons were born during that time. In 1980 he moved his family first to Clovis, NM then to Amarillo where he worked for Color Tile. He was transferred to San Angelo to manage the store there. He eventually started his own tile installation business. He installed tile in many homes in and around San Angelo. He decided after that to go to nursing school at ASU and graduated with a registered nurse degree in 1994. He worked at El Dorado hospital emergency room for a number of years, later as a dialysis nurse, then finished his career as a home health nurse for Girling Health. He was a very compassionate nurse and loved his patients. Leroy loved God, his family and country, proudly flying the American flag every holiday. He worked with the Boy Scouts, troop 36 for over twenty-five years. He was especially proud of his two Eagle Scout sons. He worked for their fundraisers spinning thousands of cotton candies. He went on numerous campouts pulling the canoe trailer, went to Philmont Scout Ranch, and served as a summer camp nurse for several years. He is a member of the Texas Veterans for Veterans and loved helping with their fundraisers and club duties. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended regularly until his health started failing. His passion was going to Arizona in January of each year and hiking the fabulous trails and collecting rocks to put around the lovely fish pond he made. His grandchildren were the delight of his life and was so proud of everything they do. He remained a sweet soul even during the failing health the last several years. He will be sorely missed. Leroy is survived by his wife Tresa of fifty-four years. Sons Brent and wife Dawn, Darin and wife April, grandchildren, Molly, Megan and Jackson Smith, brothers Glenn and wife Karla, Wayne and wife Feryl and numerous nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Wendell Bradford and wife Phyllis. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020 from 9am to 8pm at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 2pm on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way.
