On a beautiful sunny Victoria Day, my mother left her life. Christine Leach was born in Mill Hill, England in 1929 to Marie and Arthur Hill. An only child, she was evacuated during the war to the country, and seemed to have fond memories of her childhood, and times spent with her cousins and aunts and uncles. Women were not encouraged to become veterinarians at that time, so she studied physiotherapy at Edgeware Hospital in London. Christine emigrated to Canada in the early 1950's, and worked her way across The country on the train with a friend, stopping along the way to work in hospitals as a physio, finally settling in Vancouver. There, she met her future husband, handsome Irishman, William Leach (Billy). They married in Mill Hill in 1962, and settled in Calgary. In Calgary they adopted their children Nigel, Angela Marie (who passed away at 9 months), and then Susan. Work took the family to Victoria in 1969, where they stayed the remainder of their years; 17 years on Waterloo Rd, and then on Madrona Drive in Sidney. Pre-deceased by Nigel in 1993 and Bill in 2009, Christine spent years at her beloved home on Madrona Drive, enjoying horseback riding, lunch dates with her friends, the sunny beachfront view and her adored pets, before settling at Kiwanis Pavillion for the past two and a half years. The diagnosis of Parkinson's and dementia affected the remainder of her life. Christine had an abiding love for horses, travel, music and theatre, and her pets, as well as a distinguished career as one of BC's first Home Care Physiotherapists. She leaves behind two grandchildren, Rowan and Ethan, as well as Susan and her son-in-law, Nelson. Remaining family include cousin Andrew in Australia and his family, Christopher and Jeremy in England, and other friends and relatives around the world.
