Irene Hopkins Austin
Irene Hopkins Austin, 90, formerly of Mt. Cross Road, Danville, Va., passed away Monday, May 22, 2017, at Roman Eagle Rehab & Health Care Center. She was born May 13, 1927, in Danville to the late Ida Dalton Hopkins and the late Elder Jesse Dennis Hopkins. Mrs. Austin was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wallace Austin, Sr. Mrs. Austin retired with 30 years of service from Dan River, Inc., where she worked in the Weave Room. She loved to bake and enjoyed collecting and scrapbooking scriptures and other inspirational thoughts for encouragement. Mrs. Austin was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She was a member of the choir for over 50 years, and was a faithful member of the Adult Sunday School Class. Mrs. Austin is survived by her sons, R.W. Austin, Jr. and wife, Emma, Phil Austin and wife, Dyan, and Steve Austin and wife, Judy; her grandsons, Barry Austin and wife, Stephanie, Brian Austin, Scott Austin, Jason Austin and wife, Lucinda, Jared Austin and wife, Jessica, and Lucas Austin and wife, Lisa; as well as eight great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Austin was predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Jefferson, Jerline Jones, and Juanita Clifton. The family would like to thank the special caregivers at Roman Eagle, Garden Terrace Wing. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Norris West End Chapel, with Rev. Wayne C. Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 25, 2017, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service, and at other times at the home of her son, R.W.
