Dorothy Mae Custis Obituary

Dorothy Mae Custis, beloved daughter of the late Robert and Carrie Williams Deas, was born on March 3, 1942 in Newberry, South Carolina. She entered into eternal rest on October 7, 2020 at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Dorothy received her education in the public schools of Newberry, South Carolina and was a graduate of Gallman High School. Following graduation, she relocated to Washington, DC where she resided for the remainder of her life. Dorothy began working in environmental services at Rogers Memorial Hospital and eventually retired from Prince George Hospital. In 1971, while working at Rogers Memorial Hospital she caught the eye of James A. Custis. Her smiles illuminated the room and continued to captivate him until the day she departed this life. “Sweetie,” as he affectionately called her, united in holy matrimony with James “Dee Dee” Custis on April 22, 1978. They shared forty-two blissful years together. In their leisure, they enjoyed road trips to visit family and friends in South Carolina, Virginia, and Philadelphia. “Sweetie” and “Dee Dee” also enjoyed the monthly social gatherings with neighbors. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her four brothers, Earnest Deas, Moses Deas, Willie Deas, and Robert Coleman and one sister, Hattie Lake. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her loving and devoted husband of forty-two years, James A. “Dee Dee” Custis; four sisters, Helen D. Fielding, Barbara J. Deas, Margaret D. Ruth, all of Washington, DC, and Mildred D. Simpkins of Newberry, SC; one sister-in-law, Willia Mae Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
