Harold Lewis Martin, 94, of Webster City died on October 2, 2020 at Israel Hospice House in Ames. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Asbury United Methodist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life with family and friends at the American Legion. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. at Blairsburg Cemetery prior to the memorial service. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the services. Harold, son of Carl and Anna (Larsen) Martin, was born on a farm near Stanhope on January 10, 1926. He first attended rural school and graduated from Blairsburg High School in 1945. After being discharged from the Army in September of 1954, he attended Iowa State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 1958. He served in the Army from February 1946 until September 1954. He received his basic training at Lackland Air Base near San Antonio, Texas then went on to Counterintelligence School in Ft. Holabird, Maryland, and then transferred to Salzburg, Austria. The balance of his military service included assignments to Ft. Holabird, Maryland; Stuttgart, Germany; Ft. Benning, Georgia where he attended Officer Candidate School, and Ft. Meade, Maryland. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant with a later promotion to Captain while in the reserves. He earned several medal awards which included: WWII Victory, Army of Occupation with Germany clasp, Good Conduct and National Service. After graduating from ISU, he worked for a feed company for a short time and farmed near Gilbert until 1963. In August of 1963, he began working for the Farmers Home Administration, USDA, in Ames, and later in offices in Charles City, Decorah and Sheldon. He retired in January of 1985 with 31 years of Federal Service. Harold and Miriam had been Webster City residents since December 1984. Harold married Miriam Stafford on July 13, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. He is survived by sons, Thomas (Jacque) Martin, Osage; Curtis (Kandace) Martin, Webster City; daughter, Susan (Robert) Peterson, Dillon, CO; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by his wife Miriam; son, James Martin; his parents, Carl and Anna; grandson, Nick Peterson, and seven brothers and sisters. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, American Legion 191, VFW, the Lions Club and Moose Lodge.
