Charles "Chuck" Gramling Hattiesburg, Mississippi Obituary

Charles "Chuck" Gramling

Charles Louis “Chuck” Gramling, 67, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2020 after courageously battling cancer for several years. He was born on October 14, 1952 in Cleveland, Mississippi to Ruth Agner Gramling and Robert Edsalle Gramling. Chuck grew up in Merigold, Mississippi, where he attended Cleveland High School, graduating in 1970. He went on to earn a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Mississippi State University. He worked for the National Forestry Service his entire career, raising tree seedlings to create tomorrow’s forests. On June 18, 1983 Chuck married Jean Eileen Harrison, the love of his life, and later adopted her daughter, Shannon Saint Blake. They were married for 26 years and lived in Hattiesburg until her death in 2009. He is also preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Robert Edsalle Gramling Jr. and Anne Carol Gramling. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Gramling, and sister, Beth Gramling Szescila, as well as four nephews. Chuck was an active member of the Audubon Society for decades and spent much of his free time on bird watching outings with that group. He was one of the founders of the annual butterfly count in the Delta National Forest and found great joy in studying the natural world. He loved his family, music, playing his drums, dancing, nature and beer. He wasn't the best dancer in the room, but he was always the first one out on the dance floor, even if he was sometimes out there alone. Despite his long battle with cancer, he was always positive and upbeat with a smile on his face, never asking “Why me?” He was a friend to everyone and will be greatly missed by so many. Due to the pandemic, a private service for the family will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 5:00 PM at Moore Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Audubon Society would be appreciated.
