Wayne Theodore Hensley a man of many trades (masonry, sales, and a butcher for Alpha- Beta Markets). He was a United States Army Veteran, sharpshooter, and a driver for General Wes Moreland in Vietnam. He lived most of his life in Southern California and passed away from COVID-19 related pneumonia in Joplin, Missouri on October 3, 2020 at the age of 80. Wayne is survived by his children, Jeff Hensley and Megan Hensley Alvarez, his grandchildren, Joshua Alvarez, Maressa Alvarez, Trevor Hensley, Taylor Hensley, Daniel Alvarez, Jessica Hensley, Matthew Alvarez, Grace Alvarez and Aden Alvarez, his great grandchildren, Adam Alvarez, Myles Alvarez and Willow Hensley. He is preceded in death by his father, James Clarence Hensley (J.C.), his father referred to Wayne as, “Bud”, his mother, Laura Nelson Hensley and his sister, Gloria Hensley Hull. Wayne was born in Orange, CA on February 26, 1940 to James and Laura Hensley. He attended Fullerton High School in 1958 and was a journeyman for Alpha Beta and attended Orange Coast College receiving his certification in business management. He married Jeri Warnes Hensley on October 4, 1965, a clerk for Southern California Gas Company and they resided in Anaheim, Ca. On May 30,1968 and November 18,1969 respectively, he welcomed his 2 children with love. He would be divorced in 1978. He was remarried to Connie Hensley in 1993. Connie preceded Wayne in death in 2011. During the time of their marriage they resided in Tehachapi, CA. A lifelong antique collector and road show participate, Wayne enjoyed thrift shopping and Swap Meets. He could be found reading the latest history book or novel at any given moment. Wayne absolutely adored dark chocolate (See’s and Hershey’s was his favorite). He loved his many dog’s over the years- Duffy, Sara Full of Kisses and Mr. B. Wayne always loved watching birds and had a bird feeder in front of his window so he could watch them eat- he especially loved the Bright Red Cardinals. He was a volunteer for The Pageant of Masters in Laguna Beach, CA. He enjoyed, cooking and BBQ’s, fishing trips, camping, and building with his hands. Along with his father, James, they built a cabin in Lake Arrowhead, CA. As a younger man, he assisted his father in masonry work for Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. He became a real estate appraiser, salesman, and a real estate manager. Wayne had lifelong friends that he considered as brothers, Ben Royer of Costa Mesa, CA and James (Jim) Andrews of Newport Beach, CA. They could be seen frequently at Charlies Chili and Blackies by the Sea. Both have proceeded Wayne in death. Wayne had a larger than life personality. His joyous laughter could be heard far and wide. He was a “bear hugger” and anyone who knew Wayne could expect to be hugged on. Wayne would come to faith in Jesus through the ministry of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa during the Jesus People Movement. His faith was personal and private. Whichever community that Wayne would reside in, he would make lasting friendships. He will be missed greatly by the communities of Tehachapi, CA, Orange County, CA, and Baxter Springs, KS. Wayne would become ill with various memory issues and physical ailments in Tehachapi, CA. After many visits from his children and grand- children; Wayne moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas with his son, Jeff in 2017. While in Kansas, it was discovered that he had cancer. Wayne fought cancer bravely receiving, chemo, radiation and surgery. He would be cancer free in 2019. He then began a new fight when he contracted COVID 19 in September of 2020. Both of his children were present at his side the final week of his life, as he tried desperately to fight pneumonia brought on by the virus. He would pass peacefully into the waiting arms of Jesus, the morning of October 3, 2020. Wayne’s presence and contagious laughter and hugs that were bestowed upon those who loved him immensely, will be tremendously missed. God is faithful to His Word, that He makes ALL things beautiful in His time. Private services for the family to be held in the future in Orange County, CA.
