Hugh Ambrose MacInnis Obituary

Hugh MacInnis

Frenchvale

1932 - 2020

It is with deepest sadness the family of Hugh MacInnis announces his passing on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his life, Cecilia of 58 years and their children Kelly, Brent, Lisa and Denise and beloved granddaughter, Madison.   Born October 13, 1932, Hughie spent his life building and contributing to the community in which he lived and loved, Frenchvale.  His many family, friends and neighbours will remember his kindness and generosity, along with his hard work in his career of choice, forestry.

Starting in the forestry business with his brothers, he later founded Hugh MacInnis Lumber Ltd.  With the saw mill, he expanded his business to include pulp trucks, silviculture, forestry management and firewood.  Hughie was an active member in his community as a proud member of St. Mary’s Parish Church, county councilor for 15 years in the Frenchvale District, contributor to the creation of Frenchvale Volunteer Fire Dept. and supporter of the Frenchvale Senior Citizen’s Club.  Hughie’s kindness and guidance was felt by many, whether young people spending their summers working in the saw mill or family and friends who would stop in for a story and a laugh or into the house for a cup of tea and a meal.  He was there to greet all with a smile and a hand shake.

Hughie’s proudest achievement was his family.  He was also a proud Cape Bretoner and his door was always open to welcome anyone.  He loved it most when there was a houseful of friends, family, laughter and Celtic music playing.  Recently, his most favourite past-times included walking in the woods, puttering around the wood yard and drives to Tim Horton’s.  Through the years he enjoyed Sunday drives throughout Cape Breton, playing cards – loving 45’s, discussing politics, sports in general, along with watching the Blue Jays and his Montreal Canadians both live and in the comfort of his living room.  His legacy will include his community and volunteer work, patience, laughter, storytelling and love often shown without words.  A huge hole has formed that will never be filled, until we meet again, your adoring family and friends.

Hughie is survived by his wife Cecilia (Kowalczyk) MacInnis; sons Kelly and Brent, daughters Lisa (Vic Melanson) and Denise; and granddaughter Madison.  He is survived by brothers Father Dan and Lauchie (Frances) and sisters Theresa Dowie and Rita MacDonald, extended family Margaret Ellen, Ron, Melinda, along with many nieces, nephews and friends who meant so much to him.

He is predeceased by his parents Angus and Margaret; brothers Michael (Christina), Martin (Theresa) and John Angus (Muriel); sisters Mary Ann (Steve) MacIsaac, Mary Margaret (Hugh) Campbell and Annie (Jerome) Deleski, and brothers in-law; Alex Dowie and Donald MacDonald.

A special thank you to Dr. Blair Williams, as well as the many staff from Palliative Care, with special mention of Holly Winn, RN, along with the VON team for their exceptional care, kindness and compassion they showed to Hughie and the family.  God Bless you all.
