Alberta Tate Walker Obituary

Alberta Tate Walker, 85, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017 at a local healthcare facility. She retired from St. Louis Public School System in 1997 after 42 years of teaching. Alberta was a graduate of Vashon High School 1951; Harris Teachers College, where she received her BA in 1956 and St. Louis University, where she received her M. Ed in 1959. She was a member of the NAACP, Urban League and the Greater Leonard Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis, MO. She was an esteemed educator in the St. Louis Public School system. Mrs. Walker enjoyed the gift of teaching as she knew that an education was a true gift to her students. She thoroughly loved her church family and community. She sought opportunities to bring people to Christ by showing the fruits of the Spirit in her daily life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Tate, Sr. and Lula Gavin Tate; husband, Allie V. Walker and seven siblings. Donations can be made in memory of Alberta Tate Walker to the following: National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC and United Negro College Fund. Survivors include her daughter, Shana (Ulystean) Oates; grandson, Tate Allen Walker Oates, all of Ooltewah, TN; nephews, Melvin Tate, David Harris, Willie Arthur Long and niece, Yvette Goods-Webb, all of St. Louis, MO; caregivers, Saundra Turner; family friend, Darlene Tobias and Byron Austin. A celebration of Life service will be held at a later date in St. Louis, MO. The body will lie in state, Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 9 AM until 8:30 PM and the family will receive friends from 3 - 4 PM at the funeral home.
