Lorraine Slusar Okotoks, Alberta Obituary

Lorraine Slusar

It is with sadness that we announce the graceful passing of Lorraine Elizabeth Slusar at the age of 93 years. Lorraine was a bright light on the planet. With quick wit and an infectious laugh, she carried positivity into the lives of everyone who knew her. She was calm, wise and an excellent listener. She had an amazing ability to make whoever she was with feel truly seen and understood. Her warm encouragement and adventurous spirit made her a wonderful gift to spend time with. She is lovingly remembered by her sons Garth (Clover), Dana (Cindy), Dale (Dee), Ted (Rita), Mike (Lorraine), Rod, and her daughter Lynn (Frank), grandchildren Jessica, Zoe, Jonah, Kyla, Jason, Deanna and Matthew and great-grandchildren Zane, Bristol and Cooper. Lorraine dedicated her life to her family and teaching those around her how to be the best version of themselves. Her cleverness allowed her to excel at crossword puzzles, her gentleness made her a fantastic gardener, her patience kept her in loving character whether supporting a school house full of children or welcoming her large family for holiday gatherings. She enjoyed food and was a fabulous host and cook. Lorraine’s culinary skills were legendary, her buns, cabbage rolls and perogies were second to none. Lorraine was born in Odessa, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm. She was tough, making her way to school in Saskatchewan winters via horse and buggy which she managed on her own. Lorraine taught school in a one room - all ages, all grades – schoolhouse. When asked how she did it she would reply “you just listen to them, they knew they were there to learn and so you help each other”. Lorraine taught a young girl, Helen, who later would become her sister in law. Lorraine married Thaddeus Joseph Slusar on July 21, 1951 in Candiac, Saskatchewan. She looked stunning on her wedding day. Lorraine was a woman of class and elegance at all times. She loved fashion, dressing up and fancy shoes. Between the years 1952 – 1964 Lorraine gave birth to seven children. She fed, clothed, cleaned and cared for this bunch while still reserving energy to yell, jump up and down and make known bad call during football games. While successfully raising all seven children, Ted and Lorraine became active in the Lions Club in Lethbridge, Alberta. They were very engaged in giving back to the community. Ted and Lorraine travelled internationally, exploring New Zealand and embarking on state side road trips. Lorraine had a curiosity about the world and loved learning about other countries. After living over 30 years in Lethbridge, Ted and Lorraine relocated to Polo Park in High River, Alberta. Family remembers gatherings, cooking lessons, laughter and a beautiful welcoming time in High River. Lorraine was widowed on Dec 5, 2003. She was strong and sincere in the way she handled life. She never burdened others and taught by example the peace of acceptance. Lorraine moved to Senior’s Housing in Black Diamond, Alberta in 2012. Lorraine enjoyed live music and laughed loudly at the jokes of entertainers. In 2019, she relocated to Seasons in High River due to advancing dementia. Lorraine never gave up; she gave her best every day. Her strength and kindness made an impact on those she interacted with. Lorraine loved nature. She appreciated the sky, the mountains, the way the light moved across the trees and foothills. She would greet the birds gathered outside her window and watch sunsets with quiet amazement. She was incredibly clever and never lost her ability to “go for it”. Lorraine had a playful side and never lost her sense of humor. A stroke on Oct 5, 2019 resulted in partial blindness and relocation to McKenzie Towne Long Term Care in Calgary. Lorraine overcame adversity with amazing integrity. She maintained her openness to learning and generous spirit. In her final years, walking and singing were her favorite activities. She made an impact on others because she was the type of person who encouraged people to be the best version of themselves. Lorraine always strove to do the right thing. She kept a gentle sweetness and playful light about her even as her dementia progressed. She loved the feeling of the sun, the sound of people laughing and always greeted those she walked by. Another stroke event on Sep 25, 2020 resulted in Lorraine embarking on her end of life pathway. In her final days she responded positively to the support from family near and far. We played her music, read her messages and connected her to the voices of those she loved. On Oct 1, 2020, Lorraine passed gracefully on the whisper of a beautiful fall morning. Her son Ted and granddaughters Zoe and Kyla were beside her, holding her hands and peacefully celebrating the remarkable woman she was. In honor of Lorraine, take a moment to appreciate the sky and allow yourself to be comforted by the wise acceptance that comes with knowing, “It is what it is”. A family gathering and celebration of life is being planned for a date to be determined. The family would like to acknowledge the years of loving care and great food provided by the High Country Lodge. Her time at Seasons was enhanced by the attentive care staff there. A big thank you to the phenomenal care givers at McKenzie Towne for the genuine friendships they formed with Lorraine and the excellent end of life care they provided. Arrangements in Care of Snodgrass Funeral Home Okotoks 403-938-3111.
