Dennis Brophy Obituary

Dr. Dennis Richard Brophy, 75, of Powell, Wyoming, passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2020.

Dennis was born on August 6, 1945 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Floyd H. Brophy and Phyllis M. Brophy (Larish).  After graduating from Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin in 1963, Dennis went on to get his BA and MA degrees from Washington University in St. Louis in 1967 and 1968, his Masters of Divinity from the Pacific School of Religion in 1971, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Texas A&M in 1995.

Dennis taught Psychology and Philosophy, first as an Associate Professor at Northwest College in Powell from 1975-1996, and then as a Professor from 1996 until 2016, when he retired from Northwest College.  Prior to moving to Powell in 1975 to teach at Northwest College, Dennis worked as an education minister at churches in Port Huron and Ann Arbor, Michigan and in Chula Vista, California.

In addition to his dedication to teaching and learning, Dennis had a lifelong passion for travel which led to his exploring all seven continents on extended tours throughout his life, including every state in the U.S.  He especially loved mountain vistas, water falls, and rose gardens and happily shared his many photos and videos taken of these during his extensive travels and hikes. In keeping with Dennis’ deep interest in and appreciation for art and creativity, in 2016 he helped design and donated a large, mosaic glass tile mural of Heart Mountain that is displayed on the wall of the College’s Yellowstone Building, in memory of his parents.  Dennis was “one of a kind” and his creative spirit was very evident in his beloved vehicles. He was known around the area for driving his tricked-out trucks, his classic Corvette, and his fully-chopped motorcycle.

Survivors include his sister, Linda (Jeff) Russell of Madison, Wisconsin; his brother, Scott (Barb) Brophy of Bristol, Wisconsin; his brother, David (Kristi) Brophy of Middleton, Wisconsin; a niece, Ashley Brophy of Orlando, Florida; a nephew, Michael Brophy, Los Angeles, California; and a number of cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and by his stepfather, Arthur Larish.

In keeping with his religious faith, Dennis was a longtime member of and deeply involved with the Red Lodge Community Church where he cherished the many close friendships that he made there over the years.

Due to COVID-19, the family is not planning a memorial service at this time.  For those who would like to, the family asks that you donate to a charity of your choice in Denny’s name.  Thank you.
