Byron Hale Delavan

Canandaigua - Byron Hale Delavan, age 91, passed away after a brief illness, on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Caroline; son, Byron Hale (Allison) Delavan, Jr.; and grandson, James Hale Delavan. Byron was born in Skaneateles and was the son of Nathan Hale and Jessie (Lay) Delavan. He was a graduate of The Hill School in Pennsylvania, attended Cornell University and was a graduate of Babson College. Byron was a US Navy Veteran. Upon graduation from Babson, he joined the family business, Delavan Corrugated Box Inc., in Syracuse. After the family business was sold to the Mead Corp., he worked there for a short time. Byron later joined A.B. Cowles & Co. in Victor, where he founded and serviced a childrens book division and commuted to New York City for 25 years. Byron was a member and former board President of the Ontario Co. Historical Society and a longtime board member of the Granger Homestead Society. He was also a member of the Merrill Hose Volunteer Fire Co., Canandaigua Country Club, Canandaigua Sportsmans Club and the Canandaigua Scientific Association. Byron was awarded "Mr. Canandaigua" by the Chamber of Commerce in 2017. The family will receive friends at their home at 164 N. Main St., Canandaigua on Sunday, October 11, from 1-5 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to The Hill School, 860 Beech St., Pottstown, PA 19464. Arrangements are by Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., Canandaigua.
